sometimes i think about how only my oldest knew me with any remaining semblance of my youth. if i could alter history, i would have the same children i have spaced out exactly the same but start 5 years earlier.

i think it's important for young children to have youngish, energetic parents. my youngest get the short-end of the stick. i take fewer bike rides and hikes with them. Read less with them make up fewer games for them. I don't know if it's that I have less energy or that i'm selfish and spending time with them was always just about me and the novelty's worn off after doing it with the older ones. Or maybe there's just less time because the older ones are so busy with activities that i'm carting them to.

my experience has been exactly the opposite. with the older ones i was still under the impression that doing fun, youthful things for myself and striving at work were cr. i can’t say whether i’ve matured or the go-getter in me has just been beaten too far down, but i no longer spend nearly as much energy on that front. coupled with my first-hand insight as to how fleeting the early years are, i’ve been much more directly involved with the younger ones at an earlier age.
