Fujita served on the board of Softbank, whose Japanese founder, Masayoshi Son, once idolized Fujita as a boy. He served as vice-chairman of Toys 'R' Us Japan. Fujita wrote eight books on business strategy. His first book, The Jewish Way of Doing Business, explained that Jews had taken over the business world and exhorted his readers to use Jewish business methods to become rich themselves. The book was also part autobiography, in which Fujita drew parallels between antisemitism and the discrimination he himself faced because of his Kansai dialect. (He also believed that Jews had settled in Osaka some 1,000 years ago, which was why people from the area were craftier businessmen.) Published the year after Fujita opened his first McDonald's restaurant in Ginza, the book was an immediate success and went on to sell over a million copies.[4]

After his first McDonald's meal in 1967, Fujita was amazed by its efficiency and popularity. After selling imported bags and shoes, Fujita seized on the opportunity to start McDonald's franchises in Japan in 1971. His strategy for selling McDonald's to the Japanese people involved the following statement: "The reason Japanese people are so short and have yellow skins is because they have eaten nothing but fish and rice for two thousand years... if we eat McDonald's hamburgers and potatoes for a thousand years we will become taller, our skin become white, and our hair blonde."[1][2]

Core Idea of the Book
The book’s central thesis is that Jews supposedly possess distinctive commercial instincts and strategies, and that Japanese entrepreneurs should learn from these traits.
Fujita frames “Jewish business methods” as a model for:
entrepreneurship
financial discipline
negotiation and trade
global networking
He presents the argument in a self-help / business-advice format, mixing anecdotes, historical claims, and cultural commentary.
However, the book relies heavily on generalizations about Jews as a group, which scholars frequently describe as stereotypical or mythologized rather than factual.
Main Arguments (Summary)
1. Commerce as a cultural specialization
Fujita argues that Jews historically excel in commerce because persecution pushed them into portable professions like trade and finance.
He claims this created:
adaptability
financial literacy
international networks
This idea appears throughout the book as an explanation for perceived Jewish success in business.
2. Profit-first mentality
He emphasizes that business should prioritize profitability over sentiment.
Advice includes:
never run a business primarily for prestige
always focus on margins and cash flow
treat commerce as a disciplined craft
This section is essentially conventional business advice.
3. Education and family transmission
The book claims Jewish families supposedly train children from a young age to think about:
money
trade
negotiation
Fujita presents this as a cultural advantage.
4. Global networking
Another theme is that Jewish communities allegedly maintain international connections that allow information and capital to flow easily.
Fujita encourages Japanese businesspeople to think globally in the same way.
