Wilt wasn't just quick agile, or skilled "for a big," he was all of those things for a player of any size. He gets slept on in goat conversations because of the TEAM aspect. But in pure 1v1 capability, he's in a league of his own

Not winning consistently is an issue. My view is that ppl just don't feel comfortable going earlier than magic/bird in making comparisons to today's game. They reach back past then to pluck out the guys who clearly should be on the all-time goat lists (wilt, russell, kareem, west, maravich), but nobody really knows where to put them.
And the Jordan reverence is more than just team success (although he certainly has that, bill russell, IIRC, crushes him). Dude's cultural impact was unmatched. I was going to use the example "it's like saying JFK was a forgettable potus on the order of william henry harrison," but the more I thought about it, jordan was a bigger cultural juggernaut than jfk. For a generation of kids it didn't matter if you were a white dork from huntsville alabama, you were a jordan-bulls fan who watched his games and pretended that you too naturally stuck your tongue out while driving to the hoop on cletus dinwiddie's driveway. |
