But let's extend the logic of your post out a bit. The Xbox One was a massive flop and Microsoft was completely Done Here after that...which says a lot about how people felt about the prior gen, according to you. That makes PS3 the clear winner over Xbox 360, which would also of course make PS2 the clear winner over Xbox.

We can see the culmination of this in the latest Xbox getting absolutely bodied by the PS5, getting outsold 2.7 to 1. I would argue that this is a representation of how people cumulatively felt about all prior gens, in aggregate. The sum total of everything Microsoft has done in gaming is that Microsoft is the loser. The bottom line is that gamers don't care about Xbox. They liked Microsoft bleeding money to provide a massively subsidized Gamepass, but that was never sustainable. As soon as the financial spigot was turned off and Microsoft asked gamers to pay something closer to the true cost of the service, gamers revolted. Microsoft's entry into gaming was a complete failure. Microsoft entirely lost the console war, and no case can be made that it was ever ahead.

This of course is the opposite of the PS3 having a "Pyrrhic victory," as you contend. How is it Pyrric when Sony went on to completely vanquish Microsoft in the following generations?

PS2 launched without games. And that’s what drew the developers in. Cutting edge hardware. DVD. No other games for competition initially. That’s what Nintendo learned. Super Mario 64/OOT made western third party games look like shit. So they decided to not even bother. So making Games actually hurt them back then.
