They all failed to predict current year AI capabilities in this timeline and none of the plots make sense anymore without "early AI adoption"

This is the movie that inspired the thread. There is no AI in that movie as we understand it. They made a robot and skipped the entire AI development. The robots in the movie were all dumber than Opus 4.6 and appeared to be running glorified system prompts without any "artificial" learning or internal change manifesting

this was in 2007, a decade after Infinite Jest:

https://www.computerwoche.de/article/2608731/amazon-s3-lets-customers-ship-big-data-3.html

Amazon's S3 cloud storage service has a new option, called AWS Import/Export, for quickly uploading large amounts of information to its data centers. It uses a well-developed, multimodal content delivery network that can transmit terabytes of data faster than a T-3 leased line.

The fact that this network is based on jets, trucks and messengers with walkie-talkies doesn’t make it any less useful to enterprises, many of which have been using overnight shipping services for backups for several years, according to 451 Group analyst Henry Baltazar. Just make sure the data’s encrypted in case it falls off the back of a truck or otherwise gets lost, he said.

Shouldn't have to do this, but xo 2026 is dumb as shit so let me explain this for the dumb gook/Indians and bald autists ITT who don't know what a plot hole or AI is.

In Blade Runner 2049, K has Joi (an intelligent digital avatar with persistent memory, vision and reasoning) standing beside him while he manually scans enormous amounts of DNA data looking for an anomaly.

He eventually notices two identical genetic records himself. In 2026, one of the first things we’d do with far less advanced AI is give it the dataset and ask it to find duplicates and anomalies.

So the movie predicted sophisticated companionship with a digital avatar in 2049 but failed to imagine ordinary AI-assisted information extraction and knowledge work.

That is literally the clinical definition of a plot hole.

Hope that fucking helps!

dune’s general approach is a good one since it addresses the issue and then logically negates it as a plot factor, although the in-universe mechanics of that negation are a bit hand-wavy afaict.

Nothing like a LLM that can literally train itself to get smarter at exponential scale bounded only by the existence of water. And which they would've been asking a million questions the entire movie
