not familiar with Wakefield tbh but I would classify Hodsgon as more of a Weird Fiction/sci-fi writer. Blackwood too, but a lot of his output was in line with the Victorian ghost story tradition.

are you a Turn of the Screw scholar? Admittedly I've only read it once but I'm a little confused as to why it is the most discussed/debated/controversial ghost story. It doesn't seem all THAT ambiguous imo.

I only read it once but I loved it. His other ghost stories are good too (as are his novels; I still need to finish Portrait of a Lady but I liked it, and I loved The Bostonians)

I have a middle of the road interpretation which is that she killed the kid but that the ghosts were real to a certain extent or else that she had latent psychic abilities which allowed her to "see" things from the past
