my experience of being alive is that people who suck always want to drag you into the mud with them. this is true even for people who live "IRL". there is nothing inherently interesting about people and places in the world, it's all the same shit underneath at its core. you go travel to some exotic place and you realize it is the same dusty old people milling around the same tired street hawking bland merchandise. the conversations are stale and predictable, the phenotypes stock or worse. in dark corners you see desperate Tommy T figures glaring at you with Dravidian eyes and you scramble off to somewhere safer.

So with this "experience" under your belt, you come to realize that there is essentially nothing to be done but occupy your consciousness with some goal or distraction from the hideous and hauntingly empty world outside your window. video games are serviceable at this in their limited capacity. Diskuss.

as for gaming, ok, as you say, you're 40. when your dad was 40 was he like "hey son, guess what, there's this thing called grunge, it provides a Reprieve from glam rock!" like wtf, no, never. so how am I supposed to be invested in the indie reprieve from AAA when I never gave a fuck about western AAA to begin with? The games I actually enjoy have their presentation and gameplay loops rooted in the designs pioneered by the Old Masters of the 90s. Japanese Titles with exquisite, ingenious design. Dark Souls is in the lineage of games like Super Ghouls n Ghosts or Mega Man or something. Punishing at first, but not nearly as hard as it seems. The Roguelikes and Indie Roguelites and other western shit are an assault on the nervous system. I was an Adult during the pre-zoomer western console zeitgeist of 2007-2015 before the State of Gaming was torn asunder. IOW expecting me to give a fuck about Star Wars Outlaws or Hollow Knight or whatever shit you play is a big fucking ask. you wouldn't expect your dad to listen to Incubus. Why can't I just play the Same Things. I still play games. I got the Platinum Trophy in FF7R1 & 2. 2 is considered really fucking hard. there is a 30+ minute boss rush and it has to be perfectly executed. but don't just expect me to Keep Gaming to fill the time. that's not what we did in my day. I was already on thin ice if I was Seen Gaming (or doing homework). Play the game, if it's good, and move on. This is how I Gamed in my formative years. Discuss.

I guess he also beat the new Astro Bot game which seemed pretty cool. He got about 2/3 through the new Spiderman (came with the PS5 he got). Hasn't really played anything else

Japanese-supervised games have fair af difficulty except shoot em ups I guess. western games always want to fuck you over.
