Assume:

(1) You were born and raised in the US and spent pretty much your whole life in the US, but you have some moderately close connection to another country--e.g., one of your parents was born abroad.

(2) You are good enough at a sport to qualify for another country's Olympic team or World Baseball Classic team, etc. But, you wouldn't make the US team.

Would you join the other country's team? Would you do so if it required getting citizenship in the other country?

This is inspired by the WBC and olympics. Some of the WBC rosters are just a bunch of guys born in the US with a tenuous connection to the country they're representing. E.g., a big portion of Britain's pitching staff was born and raised in California. And Jazz Chisholm is on the GB team despite being born in the Bahamas (independent from Britain for the last 50 years) and raised in the Bahamas and the US (independent from Britain for the last 250 years).

sure. participating in the olympics is a really rare and cool experience. and if i was good enough to make any country's team i would be passionate enough about the sport to really be stoked.

only if i can still keep my us citizenship too.

i wouldn't feel too much patriotic guilt playing for another team. it's all meaningless symbolism. plus if im not good enough to make the us team im not gonna cost them a medal. and if i did then they should have recruited me and can get fucked.

But it's not for you. You're not British or whatever. It demeans the competition if it's a bunch of guys from the US claiming a connection to another country and playing each other.

the once in a lifetime opportunity to do something truly exceptional, both competiting in the olympics and fucking and sucking my way through the olympic village, outweighs that to me.

i think olympians repping their country is kinda flame. but even if i agreed id still do it and just take a dive if i was about to steal a medal from the us.

I guess all the Bahamas dudes qualify because when their parents were born, it was still British. And the American ones have a British parent or grandparent or something.

It's weird and almost kind of perverse that you have this international competition of nations, where most of the people representing certain of those nations aren't really from that nation and have only a tenuous connection to it.

It's cool seeing, e.g., a bunch of Japanese guys represent Japan and a bunch of Mexican guys represent Mexico, etc.

Ass Sunstein outed as oldmo. I'm at a bar right now and there's two old white-haired birdshits bitching about this EXACT thing, even citing to Jazz Chisolm.

That people from a certain country should represent that country in a competition of teams representing their country isn't a particularly oldmo take.
