if you've been doing BIGLAW for 25 years surely you have the money to retire comfortably. do they love the law THAT much?

it is demonstrably true, how many retirees do you know and what are they doing? at best you can buy some stupid cheaply built house somewhere warm and not be around your grandkids while you mostly sit around in your stupid house

sure but the 60 year old who could retire comfortably could still have some decent life before they get too old and frail and they could see their kids/grandkids more.

why slave away in BIGLAW the last decent years of your life?

because they can't, there is nothing to do, what are they going to go to the movies 4 days a week, play 8 rounds of golf and take up hiking? No, they are going to sit around wherever they are doing the same things they've always done. At some poing life becomes waking up, fiddling around, eating lunch, fiddling around, eating dinner and then going to bed in front of the tv and if you were the sort to do anything about that, you wouldn't have spend decades in biglaw, you'd have been a ski instructor or something cool

"waking up, fiddling around, eating lunch, fiddling around, eating dinner and then going to bed in front of the tv"

still sounds better than BIGLAW.

i think at some point you just become mentally broken and don't even know how else you would live, like what would give your life meaning any more. or maybe it gets easier as you get more senior? agree you don't really see anyone leave

that's really depressing, but probably accurate.

I think if they leave by age 45 they have a chance to readjust. But I guess if they stick it out that long they just can't leave at that point, their career becomes too much a part of who they are.

I've worked for guys in their 60s and older who were like this. When you have wasted all of your early and middle age years grinding there is nothing left. These guys have no hobbies, nobody they really care to be around all day, there is nothing else for them. Their brains are blown out and not capable of enjoying anything new. The only thing that keeps the fear of death away is to just keep grinding.

Better to quit with just enough early than keep going. There is no special reward for playing out the string. But if you don't quit early enough you are fucked.

yeah, I put the "quit with just enough early" age at somewhere between 40-45. If you stay longer than that there is no getting out.

Had a heart attack this year and it put life in to perspective. Cut the retirement goal BS and spend your working years doing stuff you love when you're able bodied, healthy and have the energy. Push the limits of whatever time off you can get and afford. Fuck all the waiting to retire bullshit. Life is short, don't fall for the BS.
