Violent, western-developed games cause mass shootings imho

Mass shooters are statistical ghosts. If an event’s likelihood is 1 in 10,000,000k, you are never going to capture it cleanly in lab aggression tasks, self-reported hostility scales, or short-term behavioral proxies. Social science is good at measuring mean shifts, not pathological outliers. It can tell you whether violent games raise heart rate or irritability by 3%. It cannot tell you how a single alienated, obsessive, grievance-soaked mind metabolizes thousands of hours of simulated domination.
The “selection effect” is only half the story. Yes, violent Scum/Losers are drawn to violent Games. But feedback loops exist: obsession sharpens fantasy fantasy rehearses identity identity seeks expression Social science hates feedback loops because they ruin clean causality. But human psychology is loops. The industry’s favorite move is to say: “They were already violent.” That’s like saying: “The fire already existed, therefore gasoline is irrelevant.” Discuss.

But imo at least acknowledging that violent western-developed games are horrifying is progress. There was nothing that came after Doom 1-2 or Mortal Kombat 1-3 that matched it terms of Scumminess and Hellish imagery. The later games feel sanitized even if they’re still violent af. I feel this is a byproduct of the Democratic Caucus’ hearings in the 90s. What people should at least do is what I’m doing — just be like “wow just wow these games are violent, and probably inspire Losers to do mass shootings.” At some point, congress should call western developers such as Todd Howard for Hearings where they are harangued. Also, respectable parents should limit their kids to Japanese games exclusively. |
