There are enough Republicans in Albany to protect some districts - also incumbents in super-lib districts of NYC enjoy easy fundraising and coasting to reelection over running some nonsense district that sends tentacles upstate and is structured to be majority Dem but at risk in a bad year or if they fuck up sufficiently.

NY has stuck to fairly compact and geographically logical districts but maybe optimized a little. If you wanted to gerrymander you would weaken the prospects of Staten Island electing a Republican by breaking it in half and pairing with some very liberal parts of Manhattan or Brooklyn where today you are currently wasting Dem votes. You also might draw a goofy Long Island district that includes as many Republicans as possible to reduce the frequency at which Long Island elects 2 Republicans. And the new 17th was intended to be a close win for Dems but did not pan out, which is a danger of creating close districts to maximize your upside potential.

Illinois democrats perfected the tentacle districts. Their gerrymander completely held up this year despite the red wave.

your poast is probably valid though regarding the rationale, and is even more reason why we need term limits.

The geography of NY makes it harder with the shape of it, and the various islands. You can't draw tentacles from Long Island or Staten Island directly upstate without all going through NYC and it would just be so ridiculous looking.
