Ever push a VHS tape into a VCR and heard all those little motors whirr and buzz? Ever seen a Lexus with a Pioneer 6-CD caddy in the glovebox? Ever seen one fail? What about MiniDisc players? Sony made millions.
In terms of "software" in those days, at most you got a programmable LCD screen and some buttons. Japanese people never cared about the computer. They were trying to perfect the tiny motors and microscopic doodads inside the device. They were doing that better than whitey, coming up with new applications and designs for these things, giving us Infiniti cars with active suspension to rub our faces in it right before the crash
