I'm 37 and about 20 pounds overweight. I need around ~3300 calories per day to maintain my weight. If I try to cut back by 300-500 calories per day, I just wake up in the middle of the night starving and make up or exceed that calorie deficit by eating something. Wtf? In my 20s i could lose weight easily. Feels impossible at this age.

I think stress is fucking with my appetite. When I cut back on calories, I literally wake up feeling severely starved, and the desire to eat is so intense it's unstoppable.

I usually don’t keep junk in the kitchen. Yesterday I tried cutting back by around 400-500 calories during the day. I woke up at 2 AM with intense hunger, and I made four pieces of whole wheat toast and ate it with butter as I struggled to stay awake.

I don't think there's that much sugar in my diet, definitely no added sugars. Most of the sugar in my diet comes from fruit (primarily bananas, blueberries, and occasionally raspberries).

I eat a ton of fiber throughout the day. Probably over 200% of the recommended daily amount per day, no exaggeration. Also, protein comes primarily from non-fat Greek yogurt and chicken. My diet is pretty boring, with no gaping issues as far as I can tell: no added sugars, only natural sugars from fruit, good sources of protein throughout the day, lots of fiber, healthy fats (primarily olive oil), whole wheat bread, beans, etc.

At this point I honestly think the problem is more psychological than anything else.

intermittent fasting. dont eat anything until after 3 or 4 pm or something depending on you're sleep schedule. you dont want to be eating a yuge meal right before bed either.

on top of that you might want to change the foods you eat. experiment with more fiber if you want but the other way is getting fat adapted which worked much better for me

do it in an incremental fashion: make your eating window 7am-7pm. then 9am-7pm, then 11am-7pm and so on.

You should just take ozempic or another GLP drug

Being at a legit caloric deficit over a long period of time feels horrible and makes your life miserable

Nobody else is gonna tell you this because people like to act self righteously about fitness and weight loss like it's a "just b urself" thing when in reality living at a caloric deficit is fucking terrible

Stop exercising and just starve yourself for a couple months.

No breakfast

No carb

No drink

Small lunch and dinner of meat and vegetables

Embrace hunger pangs and the feeling of hunger

You really only have three options:

1) Decrease input (typically means eat less)

2) Increase output (typically means exercise more)

3) Drugs (typically includes metabolic manipulation)

Since (1) isn't an option, pick from the remaining two.

But this is XO, so I'm assuming everyone will advice yo-yo dieting or keto (which people think means eating only 100g carbs/day), you'll do whatever's easiest, and you'll end up worse off than before.

Like most things related to fat loss, the theory & practice of putting one's body into ketosis comes from the bodybuilding underground. As a mainstream trend, it somehow transformed into a simple "low carb" diet.

Getting into (& maintaining) a state of ketosis is exceedingly difficult and not attainable by normal people with normal jobs. Even putting a creamer into one's morning coffee ruins the whole thing.

has to be ozempic. it completely quiets hunger pangs and leaves you feeling satiated / impossible to eat more on a highly restricted caloric intake. 600 cals / day feels like 3500.
