I don't know if this was just a regional thing but girls would wear their boyfriend's away jersey to games to show their ownership of him. I found out from talking to a few of them (this was when I was in HS too I wasn't an adult doing this) that they didn't know anything about positions, BUT they still had an inherent sense of which numbers were the best to have, and it broke down by position. The worst numbers to have were in the 60s & 70s (fat offensive linemen or 4th string linebackers) the best were 0-20 (qb & rb) and some in the 90s (defensive ends). 50s numbers were also good. Also at our school numbers in the 80s were prized cause it was for WRs but I imagine that wouldn't be the case at a school with blacks.

My number was 67 as a freshman and i had very few options then as a sophomore i changed to 52 and it opened up a lot more opportunities. Our QB actually had our spanish teacher wearing his jersey to games until she was told to stop

This loyal girl proudly wears #79, her bf is probably left tackle, the other ones were probably "free agents" maybe couldn't lock down a good number or were dabbling with soccer guys. A jersey is essentially like an engagement ring at that age and more guys should realize the power it has . I told my daughter she needs to go to the first day of 2 a days and start scouting

cr it can have life-long consequences for the guys too

your jersey number is going to be the number that you put at the end of your digital pseudonyms and gamertags. if you get stuck with one of the "ick" ones, you're set up for worse life outcomes forever. conversely, securing a "Chad" number can be the difference between middling success and "making it big," even having a 5.0+ KD ratio

Also cheerleaders would decorate each varsity players locker before game days, there was some system of how they got assigned that none of us ever figured out but there was a clear difference in effort. The popular guys lockers looked like they spent hours on it, very elaborate decorations, and then the backup long snapper would have like his name written in sharpie on some painters tape stuck on there
