Why do we even need a ceasefire? Can't we just, like, leave?

Because if "we" (the "United States") just leave without a formal and "binding" ceasefire agreement, Israel will just keep attacking Iran and committing terrorism etc against them. And then Iran will keep attacking Israel (and the gulf states) in return, "obligating" "us" to come to their "defense." There can never be any genuine peace or cessation of hostilities
The whole situation is completely ridiculous because it's literally just Israel behaving in a completely psychopathic manner and they are only behaving that way because they know that the "United States" will always come to their "defense"
The situation is even MORE ridiculous now because Iran has demonstrated in practice that they can close the strait at any time, very easily, at will, and bring the entire global economy to its knees. They hold all of the leverage. If the other guy holds all the leverage, you have to try to restrain him via a treaty/binding agreement
This whole fiasco is truly absurd. Like you really could not "ask for" a better demonstration of the elected members of the US federal government being completely pathetic, shameless sellouts for a few shekels from Jewish lobbyists

it's not so much that, it's that if we did just end hostilities unilaterally, and iran attacked us or our allies in some significant way, then there'd be enough support for the war that we might be able to engage in a meaningful way and have a legitimate reason to do so.
what i discounted too much is that israel will just keep doing jew shit and provoke an attack because they have a fannie mae implicit guarantee we'll protect them. but if that happened there would likely be sufficient support for the war that we'd be able to engage in earnest.
the worst thing to do is what we've been doing for decades: half-hearted engagements. we should either enforce our authority in the region or leave it completely.
