The biggest cost of buying your kid a car is the liability expousre. Imagine they kill someone and the car is in your name. The victim's family will argue negligent entrustment to a shithead teenager. Now you gotta lawyer up because your carrier isn't motivated to defend your personal assets. Then you're in the world where fraudulent conveyances are on the table as an actual GTO strategic decision. That's just part of the actual true cost. The $12k or whatever for some beat up jalopy is chump change

Form an LLC that exists only to own this one car and lease it to your son, and also he's the whole shareholder. Bam, you haven't created joinder with the liability.

I bought a used rental car a few years back and had great luck with it.

People claim that renters "beat the hell out of the car" but I think the reverse is true - plus the car has actually been regularly cleaned and serviced - and if it was a lemon Enterprise would've sent it back.

It's sort of wild to me that none of the used car companies really offer a meaningful warranty.

Why would a used car company offer a warranty? Any warranty as good as a factory warranty would be too expensive.

If you buy it at the right price it is fine. Some used cars like I think Toyota Camry for example, are sold at such a high premium used it makes no sense and you should just buy new.

This is outdated Gen X wisdom/prole wisdom that was valid in like 1999. If you compare Toyota with Hyundai or some domestic the prices are way lower than you would think both used and new. The REAL value is in getting a sedan over a crossover because they’re like 10% as popular in 2025.

Camry retains its value very well. It makes no sense to buy used. Just buy the car new, and it will depreciate slowly. But it doesn’t make sense to buy a car that has 30k miles on it for 95% of the new price.

My teenagers all drive something semi-modern with airbags, lane departure warnings, blind spot detection, backup cameras, and (crucially, because it’s amazing how many teenagers fuck this up) rear end collision avoidance. Reasonably slow SUVs with some mass and not too much rollover potential.

tcr is, as always, to just buy the best toyota or honda that fits your budget, if you have 12k to spend get whatever civic you can find for that money, there is nothing wrong with a 10+ year old car with well over 100k miles on it

you'd take a 2010 corolla over a 2020 domestic?

2010 corolla doesn't have a screen. Something to be said for that in this day and age.

Having worked here, I wouldn’t do it. You might find a diamond in the rough, but I wouldn’t risk it. Yes, the vehicles are serviced on a meticulous schedule. BUT, enterprise makes sure that they don’t overpay for ANYTHING. The cheapest tires, oil, parts, you name it. OEM? Forget about it. Plus, the way that they wash and clean these vehicles is heinous. Proper washing practices of the paint to avoid scratches? Ha! Gentle chemicals used on interior surfaces to avoid permanent stains? No way man! Hell, most cars (especially Toyotas) never have the floor mats installed, so by the end of the rental life their carpets are torn to shit.

OP will get some LINGLONG tires

Enterprise is the low cost leader for a reason...

For instance, they will have a Mercedes Benz (or other high end car like an Alfa-Romeo, Maserati, Land Rover) that's due for it's Preventative Maintenance sit for as long as 4 days in their shop, not being rented, while the "shop manager" with no previous auto shop management experience tries to keep within his budget and searches Ebay and Amazon for a $20 aftermarket Chinese oil filter, rather than going to the dealership and paying $50 - 80 for an OEM oil filter. Cars that need antifreeze and windshield washer fluid are instead given straight tap water. And despite the fact that location managers can get dinged for not servicing the cars according to schedule, there are LOTS of times that a renter extends their rental period, and some car miss their PM service by as much as 5-6,000 miles!

Replacing worn tires with name brand tires like Goodyear or Bridgestone? No way! Enterprise buys their tires from companies that sell and deliver tires on a daily basis with names like LingLong, DoubleStar, Giti, and Sailun. These tires are made in China, Thailand, and Vietnam and their quality is subpar compared to an American made tire.

Cars like Chargers, Challengers, Mustangs and even Camrys are beat to sheet by renters, and frequently need their driven tires changes on a 10,000 mile schedule. In closing, I'd never, ever purchase a used car from Enterprise.
