i've been focusing too much on my tone lately and note my technique.

It's a sign of vanity.

i had been using my spector euro as my primary bass with both volume knobs and the bass and treble fully boosted. no pedals and through my seymour duncan powerstage amp which is a very neutral tone (unlike for example ampeg and GK).

The result is that its a pretty full tone and because of the setup, if i dig in a bit, i can get a nice honk to it and that overdriven 90s kind of alice in chains type sound.

I noticed though that in the upper midrange and on, i get a bit lost in the mix.

Ive switched back to using my peavey cirrus which is a less full low end, cleaner tone but more articulate. I keep the EQ on the bass mostly flat and the pickup selector in the middle. To compensate, ive started using my sansamp bass drive pedal with slight overdrive and boosted bass. That together with the compression gives me more of a geddy lee type tone.

But I also recently got a synth pedal that ive been toying around with for a couple days now making weird sounds rather than perfecting my bass parts.
