This is what I am thinking

-Albuquerque (Breaking Bad, Nat'l Museum of Nuclear Science & History, Old Town)

- Alamogordo (Museum of Space History)

- White Sands Nat'l Monument

- Roswell (UFO Museum, Walker Aviation Museum)

- Carlsbad Cavern

- Billy The Kid Museum

- Santa Fe (Downtown)

- Bandalier

- Los Alamos

- Taos Ski

All generally one direction of travel ABQ-Roswell-Santa Fe-Taos.

La Guelaguetza is in the ghetto but it's 180. The Copper Lounge is decently upscale for the area, food isn't bad and tbey have mezcal flights which are 180. Also in the ghetto, but a different ghetto. Really the whole town is kind of sketch tbh, but I spend most of my time in the air force base.

the best dish in the city is a green chile burrito with chicharrones at the new mexico beef jerky company. also cutbow coffee is 180. two fools tavern is a 180 pub. ihatov bakery on central is 180. the best weed is at carver family farms. the shop on central is 180 brunch. for something fancier los poblanos is 180 if it's nice outside. and for the money it's hard to beat frontier. it's the fastest-cheapest-best-high-volume restaurant i've ever been to, the logistics of it all blows me away. the owners should be billionaires.

There isn't much one can do in Los Alamos iirc. Its still a government research laboratory town, so things are pretty secured. There is a museum but I don't recall it being very large.

It felt like a long drive from Santa Fe for what I saw.

It looks like it's about ~25min from that Pueblo site and on the way back to Santa Fe, so prob worth swinging through even for a small museum.

madrid is a cool artsy abandoned mining town between santa fe and abq. jimez hot springs outside of santa fe are cool too. ten thousand waves in santa fe is 180. acoma pueblo outside of abq is worth checking out.

southeastern new mexico might be the ugliest place on earth, not sure why you're bothering with it but whatever. white sands is 180 but that's quite a diversion from ABQ/santa fe, about 4 hours. if you're going to do it stop in hatch and get a burger at sparkys. also ruidoso is a lovely little mountain town not far from white sands. but i'd head back north after that, roswell and carlsbad are total shitholes.

santa fe, make reservations in advance for the shed, order the green chili stew, you’re welcome

gila cave dwellings, but you’ll see something similar in bandalier. the most interesting ones are off grid

vla will be too out of your way

abandoned nike silos, but someone would have to show you where they are

don’t buy hatttch chilis, the best are from lemitar

the bridge past taos that was featured in natural born killers is pretty impressive, my land is around there

epstein’s estate is accessible if you know the right people, it’s a little south east of santa fe if i recall correctly

there are several natural graveyards that you might be able to see a body decomposing, 180 if you’ve never seen something like that before

there are countless old mines but you’d die if you went into one. plenty of abandoned little towns with obscure history (eg last hanging in the state) that are cool to poke around in (carry a gun, though, just in case)

there’s a lot of kooky occult stuff up in the 4 corners area but that’s really dependent on their wiccan calendars and you’d need a guide to sneak you around to watch it

Hatch is the cr imo. You can buy highest quality peppers and related stuff. Top notch you can smell 🌶 like 20 miles away.

Southern nm is highly underrated imo. It's a whole different universe and worth exploring. Bisbee AZ is also chill and Tucson is great. This is not NM but it's the same vibe.

Is it UNHINGED to try to leave ABQ early AF, get to Sparky’s when they open/see Hatch, then drive through White Sands 8mi scenic loop, pop into Alamogordo for the Space Museum and the. Head to Roswell and either go to UFO museum if arriving before 5, or do it the next AM?

i think that's pushing it. spend the night in ruidoso, have some posole and beers at downshift, drink bourbon at win place show (closes at 6 m-w, so go there first if necessary), and go to quarters for night life (it's very prole!). tina's for breakfast and head to roswell.

also if you have daylight after alamogordo check out the three rivers petroglyphs down the highway. it's real quick, 180 views. it's not as monumental as the national park in abq but it's more accessible.

nm is the poorest and least ambitious state in the country. it is literally third-world in many places, particularly in and around the rez. there are plenty of legit richmos in santa fe and taos, but they're all old and the culture is to downplay it. it is the total opposite of the models and bottles lifestyle you usually seek. outside of the very fanciest places the customer service is abysmal. like they take pride in not giving a shit about anything. it's the whole vibe. beautiful, unique, interesting place, but jfc the people.

I'm going to TSV here soon; what weekend you there?

I'm also having trouble understanding your itinerary; you know that roswell is nowhere near ABQ/SF, right? I assume you're flying into El Paso/Midland and are going to work your way up to ABQ then SF? The southeast part of the state is not what I'd choose to see as it largely resembles west texas, although carlsbad caverns and white sands are cool.

Nice, although I stand by my view that roswell is not a Tier 1 NM location. (I've only been once; not trying to be an MFE.) Like somebody said upthread, ruidoso is 180 and basically like the hamptons for wealthy OilTexans; if you can get up to red river (just north of taos) it's 180^180.

I've come to prefer taos to all the major colorado resorts, and, in general, NM to CO, and I say that as someone who has fond childhood memories from CO. Colorado has the great outdoors, but every goddamn one of them is packed to the gills with white liberal yuppies. Taking a break from your boulder midlaw job to hike the flatirons at lunch sounds awesome, until you realize it's more like taking a multi-story escalator at the ATL airport.

do frontier for breakfast or lunch or something light and go to mesa provisions for dinner. you'll need a res even for the bar:

petroglyph national park is cool but you gotta walk a bit and it looks pretty cold.

rio grande nature center is a nice park area you can walk to the river, maybe see some sandhill cranes.

if you've really got the time, you could drive up to sandia peak or take a tram. it's a great lookout over the city and to the east.

no fucking way, beef jerky chicarron breakfast burrito all the way. you probably won't even want lunch.

frontier is great in it's own way but it's very casual, i wouldn't blow a dinner on it. mesa provisions is top notch southwestern/new mexican, one of the best restaurants in town. you can drop by frontier anytime and get a breakfast plate or a posole.

NM brother, need to run some stuff by you to make sure closed out ABQ properly. This AM went to New Mexico Beef Jerky, like I said that chicharron breakfast burrito was prob the best i've ever had, FMA. Took you up on suggestion to go to Petroglyph after that. Did one of the canyon hikes and holy fuck LMAO at having to pretend that primitive shit counts as "art." Fucking retard level rock scribbles hundreds of years after Euros had the Renaissance, LMAO just fucking LMAO. Old Town was also not very impressive, saw the church and went to the FUAAAARKING Rattlesnake Museum which was quirky and not bad. After, went the the Nuclear Science Museum which was 897094382478293763284 and had the bonus of SEVERAL aircraft on static display outside, very CR. Drove through the new downtown after which was also SPS. Chilling now, it's sleeting/snowing. Will try to get to your Monte Carlo Steakhouse reco tonight and figure out what time I need to leave for Alamogordo/White Sands/Hatch in the AM with the shit weather. Hope this snow is piling up in Taos.

sup nigga

sparky's opens at 10:30. it's 2.5-3 hours, so get out by 8. but careful with that weather, it's a long desolate stretch of highway. there are several big ravines about halfway that will be dangerous as fuck if there's ice. but it's warmer down there, so probably nbd. after hatch you cut east just before las cruces to get to alamogordo/white sands.

if you like to cruise around there's also a huge lava flow just north of white sands in carrizozo that's pretty wild. you could poke around there and then go to ruidoso the back way.

Roswell. Today was a long one. Drove from ABQ, stopped in Truth or Consequences because I was intrigued by the name. After continued to Hatch and Sparky’s. Went to White Sands (84847373636) after lunch then the Soace History Museum in Alamogordo which was also CR. Got to Roswell about 30 min ago. Too late for UFO museum.

Will hit the road early tomorrow and be at Carlsbad Caverns at 9am, after pass back through Roswell for UFO museum then stop at Billy The Kid grave and museum to stretch legs before last leg to Santa Fe. Dining at the place you reco’d.

Sat AM will do an early spin through Bandelier and Los Alamos then explore town on foot before settling in to watch FOOTBALL. Plan to be on the road by 8/9 on Sunday so I can get up skiing in Taos by lunchtime Sunday. Woke up this AM in ABQ w my car HOSED DOWN w snow and people told me Taos got tons and it’s still dumping so should be 180.

yeah i think that works. other resto recs in santa fe:

rowley ales. they make a lot of farmhouse stuff, slightly sour, but really good with really good elevated bar food. it's down the street from meow wolf which definitely should be on your list but it's not mentioned anywhere ITT, which is kind of shocking.

paper dosa is a great indian place which you would never expect there. it'll have a line out the door.

izanami is the restaurant for ten thousand waves. really really good izakaya and the whole place legit looks like japan. again, an unexpected treat in the land of chile.

two classic new mexican places in the plaza are cafe pasquals and coyote cafe. pasquals is more of a bunch place, coyote a fancier dinner spot.

another tip: the o'keefe museum in town is a fucking rip off, but the ghost ranch is really cool.

Dang, so much goods in NM. Skiing Taos is really fun and especially amazing on a pow day. Epic steeps around Kechina Peak lift. Also, Lift 2 can have epic, mostly unridden pow to explore. Locals are super friendly/fun and will show you around. The Bavarian Restaurant is great for lunch. Apres right at bottom of Al's run there for music and mingling or the Blake for grinds.

Actual town of Taos is artsy fartsy but old school. We enjoyed visiting all the local artisan shops there. Great food everywhere we went...

Santa Fe is good but pretty touristy. Check out the historic Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. Shit ton of art and jewelry around there. Georgia Okeefe's Museum was pretty cool. The Buffalo Thunder Resort on the way up to Taos was nice too if you like to gamble.

Bandalier Nat Park was interesting if you're into ancient Pueblo ruins. Pretty cool caves dwellings and rocks formations etc. If you're around there the Los Alomos museum is epic for nuclear bomb history...

And if ever do a future trip to NW New Mex check out Bisti Badlands/De-Na-Zin Wilderness. It's like stepping into some Star Wars nother world. My son and I hiked all around there tripping out on the crazy formations. Barely anyone around. Bring shrooms or some fun stuff for extra credit.

That was a LONG fucking day, drove ~455 miles. Woke up in Roswell had the scrape the frost off my car before starting, The stretch from Artesia to Carlsbad looks like something out of Mad Max, then you turn off by some industrial parks and feel like if you get pulled over you'll get tossed into Nothing But Trouble. Carlsbad Cavern was fucking unreal, real Fraggle Rock shit. It started off with AWE, then on the egress seemed a bit dark, pretty sure one of those big formations is actually Cthulu and ended up with NOWAG related LOLZ in the "Chinese Theater" tableau. Went back up to Roswell to the UFO Museum...def convinced a UFO crashed there in '47, then to the Billy the Kid Museum and Gravesight in Sumner. The drive between Roswell and Sumner is fucking wild. Two lane road forever with nothing but mesa as far as you can see in every direction. Was going like 110 the whole way. Sumnet itself was a crumbling shithole, people all seemed inbred. Billy the Kid stuff was cool. The last 50-60 miles headed up from there to Santa Fe was 98079382790238 as the sun was setting and throwing pinks and purple and blues over the landscape. Got in to Santa Fe a bit after dark. Have dinner at the shed in a few hours, debating passing TF out and getting to Bandelier early tomorrow unless there are any bars with young tramps worth checking out after dinner?

wake up early, get breakfast at the pantry, head to los alamos, tour the houses and stuff, the nuke museum, grab a bite and a coffee, go to bandelier for a couple hours, head back to santa fe for dinner, i recommend coyote cafe, a bit upscale but still pretty casual, get the elk tenderloin. you probably need to make a res at the bar. pasquales is more casual, but you might need a res there too it's very small.

It looked like it made sense to go to Bandelier first then Los Alamos, no? I am going to knock it out early in the AM (breakfast is included at the hotel), then I gotta get back in time to see the historic stuff downtown and watch the SEC CCG and the B1G game. Another jammed day. Then Sunday I can finally sleep in and head to Taos like 10/1030. TY for all the recs! Really helped flesh the trip out and make it 180.

Bandelier was cool, I guess...but I have trouble caring about 500 Indians living in a "city" that is just caves in a cliffside when 2,000 years before that Euros were creating great works and had cities with 100,000+ inhabitants. Seems like lib nonsense to pretend this shit is impressive. The Los Alamos Museum was 180 though, had no idea that the core buildings were repurposed from a 180 prepschool that was forging teen MESH into IRON for decades before the war.

Overall, I hate Santa Fe. Aside from Loretto and the San Miguel chapel the entire city is just a fake strip mall designed to sell lib boomers luxury goods, shitty art and "Indian" products. TTT AF.
