I have an 11 yo dog and 2 young kids who are quite fond of her. Unfortunately, she has a collapsing trachea, which will progressively worsen until it suffocates her to death. Could be months, could be years. In the meantime, I can pay $5,000 for a tracheal surgery which could more or less “cure” the issue but even then she’s looking at maybe 5 years tops. I’m also Poor.

If not, I recommend some veterinary schools. They may be cheaper, especially if you allow them to work with students on the dog (it would be supervised by faculty).

It’s much harder for human pre existing conditions to be hidden because most people are not just going to random doctors but having their claims submitted to major national insurance companies so there’s essentially a national database of your medical record through insurance claims.

my extended family did the dog surgery/chemo stuff once and i wouldn't do it again. yes it probably extended the life of the dog a year or something. but the dog cannot understand why it is in short term pain. it's a sad moment but i would say pick the day and end it is a compassionate OK thing to do
