Patrick Swayze, the brothers Estavaz/Sheen, the karate kid, Matt Dillon (underrated), Rob Lowe, and Tom fucking Cruise. Plus the hot chick just happened to be Diane Lane. C Thomas Howell is the main character and by far the least famous.
edit for pedantic lawfags: not actually a plot hole. more of an anomaly.

I don't know that an observation on casting is a "plot hole".
What is a plot hole in the original book is that SE Hinton is a woman who used a pseudonym so that her book would be measured by the standards of male authors and wouldn't be written off as chick lit, but the book actually sucks ass, totally feels like it's written by a woman pretending to be a man, and we would never have heard of The Outsiders, Tex, or SE Hinton were she not a woman.

none of them had been in a hit movie yet. for a lot it was even their first movie (kinda like dazed and confused). also FFC was a god at the time so every 20 something actor auditioned.
Rob Lowe talks in depth about this on several podcasts

C Thomas Howell was a pretty big name at the time among those kids actors.
the guy probably didn't help his career by starring in Soul Man.
