Shanice has taken bereavement leave three times in four weeks.
First it was her aunt, then a second aunt, then her “cousin who was like an aunt.” She always comes back with tearful stories and a fresh manicure.
When I mentioned it to HR, they just shrugged and said, “Not our job to verify family trees.” Meanwhile, I’ve been covering her shifts, handling angry customers alone.
Closed up, wiped down her register, and whispered, “Yes, friend. This is fine.”
