A major part of what made the movie excellent is that it works as this takedown of LA glamour that has so many levels for those who know LA well, but also works perfectly for 14 year olds who grew up on the East Coast and have never been anywhere west of the Ohio River.
To answer your question, the racist white population on the outskirts of LA is greatly diminished from the mid 90s. There’s still a presence if you look closely for it, and if you travel further out to the true exburbs North and West. But these are many of the people who have since noped out of CA and moved to a red state. |

It’s the kind of place that attracts 20-something PAs living four to a two bedroom apartment, along with the working class of LA, and the hanger-on aging weirdo class that is really specific to LA. That part of the SFV and really like 90% of it is just gross looking. It’s all shit tier store fronts and cheaply built apartments, condos and bungalows, and it really shoves the class divide of LA in your face as you turn and look up at the back of the Hollywood Hills where all the LA masters of the universe live and play. There are dozens of these kinds of subtle and less subtle references through out the movie eg a less subtle one is when The Wolf starts to offer Jules and Vincent a ride after they finish cleaning up the dead body in Jules’ car and they both say they live way south and he’s like fuck that get a cab. Most of the city is a pain in the ass to get to from there, but if you’re not commuting for work it removes 80% of the stress and the beaches have a lot going on if you take full advantage of all of them. If I had to be closer to Hollywood Los Feliz is a good option and if you don’t care about kids lots of other things right there like Larchmont/Hancock Park are pretty nice, and from there you have much easier access to all of Hollywood, DTLA, Silverlake and Century City and that stuff by the 405 is not too far and reachable by surface streets. If I was a rich married guy with kids paying for private schools I’d probably target Hancock Park. If I was a single guy working remote I’d be in Manhattan Beach.
