1. Tells an innocuous lie about a tangential aspect of a certain larger issue. Here, larger issue is immigration, tangential is whether or not a certain OH-based community of Haitian migrants is eating cats.

2. Media jumps on the lie, clutches pearls.

3. In doing so, media just Streisand-effects public attention onto the larger issue (open borders) and, once the attention is focused, public is now privy to a host of indisputable facts that Trump would like them to focus on - e.g. 20,000 Haitians immigrants were dumped into a small midwestern town, straining minimal public services, have been involved in various disturbances including motor vehicle deaths as they don't comply with US legal requirements and customs around driving, etc. EDIT TO ADD: Media can't help themselves and don't stop at just disputing the lie about the tangential issue but full-on gaslight the public about the undisputed truths the public is now learning about - "Yes, but the 20,000 migrants have helped vibrantly economically revitalize a dying midwestern town! And, ONLY four residents have been killed in accidents caused by unlicensed Haitian drivers. You know there are US citizens who also cause accidents every day!"

4. Public is left with the impression that Trump is a bit of a bullshitter around the edges but is largely right in what he is saying about open borders.

5. Public is left with the impression that the media/elites are in denial of or actively covering up the larger problem.

he's obviously very bright. he's had enormous success in real estate development, golf course development, television, and politics.

Same thing with Ukraine - no one believes he can solve the war in a day or whatever he claims, but now attention is focused on the fact that this is an expensive, miscalculated and unwinnable war that elites got us into which should be settled.
