Have you ever been to Western NC? Asheville is a tiny blueberry floating in a deep sea of tomato soup. All of Western NC outside of Asheville is extreme MAGA conservative.
The issue with Helene was that it had already been raining in Western NC for almost a week nonstop before the hurricane hit. So the river levels were already high and the ground was super saturated. Then the hurricane hit the cooler mountain air and dumped a huge amount of rain all at once. The combined result of all of this was massive flooding. Yes, Western NC is so far inland that hurricane winds are basically a non-issue. But you dump that much rain in that little time and you're going to have flooding issues basically anywhere.
