It wasn't supposed to be a show for children, it was one fo the first 'adult cartoons', but then when Bart became a fad with kids Fox started marketing The Simpsons to kids and thus incurring the wrath of cons. And they still kept doing this even when by season 2 the fad was over and the show was even less kid-oriented.

The Simpsons is truly from a different era. OP is of course right about the anachronistic moral panic over Bart, but what really seems out of place now is the lifestyle depicted in the show. Homer and Marge have an intact family with 3 kids. They go to church regularly and Christianity is elevated throughout the series, e.g., Flanders is always shown positively. Lisa's leftist views are satirized in thoughtful ways. I can't speak for the show after the first 12 seasons or so, but there is nothing truly vulgar to speak of.

It (the early seasons) really couldn't be made today.

Cr. There are plot lines that revolve around anti-social or immoral (90’s standards but still generalizable) premises or actions, but each episode had a similar arc of identifying the tension in contrast to an exaggerated but fundamentally ‘normal’ family/community, exploring its ramifications with levity but some seriousness mixed in, and coming to a wholesome conclusion that sets everything right. Something threatens the normal social order, it’s mildly exciting but scary, and everyone learns some lessons along the way. It’s easy to strawman this basic structure and laugh it off, but this is what mid-brow comedy looks like in a healthy society. The Simpsons did it particularly well, as did king of the hill (which was also ostensibly anti-Christian but always ended up affirming Christian values).

if im not mistaken, this was how "Roseanne" functioned too

- poverty impinges on the family

- smart enough to know they are fucked each way, family uses irony until someone goes too far and gets in trouble

- family reclaims trad values to survive, but do it their way
