Is it less a case of broader polling but more focusing on very specific key demographic groups that serve as indicators of larger trends? In other words, their internals are telling them low info black voters aren't turning out for Kamala the way they did for Biden in 2020 or whatever? |

Internals usually have much larger sample sizes, more methodically performed, and like you said occasionally pointed to detect certain trends. The internals are used to allocate campaign resources so they're very sensitive. External polling is done for little other reason than narrative control.

I think the most stunning and memorable aspect of this campaign for democrats is just how big a deal she was for exactly 3 weeks in August. It's like she blew a hole in the sky. It was some sort of temporal rift in spacetime where seemingly everyone in the media was acting like there was a massive groundswell of support for her. And for a split second, it felt like there was.
My theory is that the lightning in a bottle enthusiasm was at least in part due to a desire from the Democratic base for an actual shift in policies. For decades now the Dems have put up centrist candidates that have primarily done the bidding of wealthy white suburban liberal enclaves with advanced degrees and 1mm net worth minimum. The brief "Coconut Pill" era almost made it feel like there was a whiff of left wing populism in the air. Biden was out, no more war in Gaza and Ukraine, this Black lady was going to do something for the people.
But ever since she has been pivoting to the middle, subtly telling people she owns guns and is just a regular blue collar American. And this coincided directly with her polls fizzling out. I wonder what a parallel universe Kamala embracing leftism would look like. And at the same time Gavin has been pivoting hard to the center for the last year or so, too. Are Dems just going to become the old GOP? We like war and low taxes and ra ra USA? Let Trump "have" populism, we'll be the status quo. And the left gets pushed aside as a political pawn yet again. |
