When you're talking about Cartridges, N64 games' Landed cost, like the cost of the Cartridge itself was idk maybe $30 depending on the ROM size. Whereas a digital game is basically pure profit except for the amortized Engineering cost of the e shop.

Also most of us used to buy like 1 or 3 games a year at full price, if that. There used to be so many Used Games for like $10, or Player's Choice for like $20. You could also rent games.

back in the day btw you could Curate, it was really really obvious which games were good and which you'd just rent or buy later for $5. Nowadays there are so many B-/C+ tier games with exquisite Open Worlds, it's like they can't be cheap, but they also suck shit so go pound sand if you want $80 or something

As for the economy and inflation, the Low Losers will just say that they have less Buying Power now than people in the 90s.
