boston is much more limited. you're either overpaying to live in a select few, very small neighborhoods in unremarkable digs, or you are living in the suburbs.
that said, if you'd prefer to live in a nice and accessible suburb, boston might be best for that in the country (though still expensive) |

Even with CA's higher taxes, $275K feels light for Boston vs $375K in LA. Plus, LA is more diverse (I don't mean in the DEI sense - it's just that is some of everything you can imagine there) than Boston. I read a book once called "Bike Riding in Los Angeles." The rider goes around LA reading people's minds and observing their lives. He remarked that LA is like an endless series of small towns because you can only see three miles through the smog. The smog part is not accurate any more, but the endless series of neighborhoods rings true. Plus, it has a dynamism that Boston seems to lack. I found LA easier to fit into as an outsider.
