yeah these 'prestige' shows are better than primetime network dramas or 22 minute sitcoms with laugh tracks; but let's not go nuts.

twin peaks the return is legit art tho

Twin Peaks was the encore and companion piece to the last season of mad men if that even counts. This was also around when the dragon show started dropping in quality. The golden age has been over for almost a decade.

ntcr

-- Sopranos

-- The Wire

-- Rome

-- Deadwood

-- Oz

-- Band of Brothers

-- Generation Kill

-- Breaking Bad

-- Mad Men

-- Game of Thrones S1 & 2

-- House of Cards S1 & 2

-- True Detective S1

-- Succession

Just more high production + good writing than any other time period since movies in the 70s/80s

edit: could arguably also throw Homeland and Peaky Blinders in there

Yeah, the golden age mostly ended in probably 2015 and anyone disputing this is probably stupid. Doesn't mean it was overblown while it lasted.

I'd argue Succession belongs but that's entirely tertiary to the larger point; even if we cut it, the rest of the list is a sufficient warrant.

high production, yes. good writing, i guess, in the sense of natural sounding dialogue and logically unfolding and well paced plot. in terms of substance, though, all pretty much just high gloss soap operas, lacking in all but the most surface level or banal “ideas”

I think this criticism is varying levels of true -- mostly false -- but inasmuch as it is true of those shows, it's true of virtually all secular media in history.

Complaining that TV doesn't grapple with big ideas is a bit like asking why the radio doesn't offer STEM dissertations to listen to -- the medium is ill-suited to the task, if the shows I listed above are inadequate in your estimation.

That does not bolster your point very much.

Which literature do you think has "big ideas" that the shows I listed don't? (There are a few pretty good answers to this, but I don't think Dostoyevsky or Cormac McCarthy are sufficient to dismiss these.)

i think what bolsters my point is the evident vapidity of the shows you listed. it's a lower bar that a good chunk of literary fiction easily clears

these are entertaining shows. ive watched a lot of them start to finish. but lol at them being anything other than telenovas with top grade craftsmanship. character psychology is invariably shallow and low dimensional, the mechanisms of larger social milieu are probed tepidly and narrowly, if at all. these are things to unwind with on a sunday night; entertaining but in no way enriching.

as much as Film has degraded recently it is still a more prestigious format and the best Films >>>>> best TV. I remember an interview with the Coen Bros wherein they were asked why they don't do TV and their response was "it's just not how we think about stories". TV tends to get labored and soap opera-ish, unless it's a true outsider like Lynch who basically shot The Return as a long Film.

tv also suffers from mostly being written / directed by committee, with the composition shifting from season to season

And even without the shifting composition, the quality produced by committees is typically worse than that of a single gifted writer.
