anthropology museum is amazing

the canal thing is good on a weekend but eerily ghetto during slower days.

Xocolo is worth checking out.

Roma is a cool neighborhood for eating and drinking.

Coyoacan is an awesome neighborhood, check out the Trotsky house.

Fire up tinder the locals are thirsty.

Don’t eat street food you will get sick,

anthro museum is great

la lagunilla market on sundays is insane

they close reforma to cars on sundays and you can walk the whole central city in peace

speaking of reforma, i was there on nye once and they closed reforma and had bands play to like half a million people

xochimilco is fun

just walking around condesa, roma, and coyoacan, really beautiful old neighborhoods

teotihuacan is a nice day trip

if there's a soccer game in azteca its worth checking out just for the atmosphere, especially if its club america or pumas

tons of great food, but stick to the relatively expensive places to stay healthy

which brings up the most important point of any mexico trip: TAKE CIPROFLOXACIN

This AutoAdmit thread about things to do in Mexico City for a New Year's trip encapsulates a broad range of advice, humor, and cynicism that is characteristic of the XO board. Here’s a breakdown of the key themes, as well as the typical attitudes and advice found on XO.

Practical Travel Advice

Cultural Attractions:

The National Museum of Anthropology is repeatedly recommended as one of the top cultural spots to visit. Several posters, such as "Wang Hernandez" and "UhOh," emphasize this, along with neighborhoods like Roma, Condesa, and Coyoacan for walking, eating, and drinking.

Posters like "Fyre festival founder" suggest a day trip to Teotihuacan (pyramids) and seeing a Lucha libre show, aligning with mainstream tourist activities.

"UhOh" highlights Reforma closing to cars on Sundays, allowing for a peaceful walk around the city, and recommends the La Lagunilla market as an insane but vibrant experience.

Street Food vs. Restaurants:

There's a divide between posters who advocate for trying Mexico City's famous street food, like "Ephebophile," and others like "Wang Hernandez" who caution against it due to potential foodborne illnesses. The consensus seems to favor enjoying the local cuisine but with a recommendation to stick to restaurants to avoid getting sick.

The topic of Ciprofloxacin (Cipro), an antibiotic, also arises, with many recommending its use to stave off "Montezuma’s revenge," a common tourist ailment.

Soccer and Entertainment:

Watching a Mexican Liga soccer game at the Azteca Stadium is brought up as a worthwhile experience, especially if teams like Club América or Pumas are playing. The passion and atmosphere at Azteca are emphasized.

Cynicism and Humor

Dark Humor:

Posts like "Soren 'Bob' Odenkierkegaard’s" insistence that travelers should "just fuck whores" instead of worrying about museums or cultural attractions is a common reflection of the board’s darker humor. This reflects a cynical view of traveling, where the poster reduces the purpose of the trip to its basest elements. This attitude is often coupled with a disregard for traditional tourist activities, mocking those who claim to be traveling "for the culture."

Whore Scene:

There's a repeated undercurrent about engaging in Mexico City's sex work scene. Posters like "Soren 'Bob' Odenkierkegaard" express interest in finding information on this, but the general advice suggests using Tinder instead.

This aligns with the board’s frequent flirtation with controversial or taboo topics, often using hyperbole or exaggeration for effect.

Sarcastic Remarks:

"nk’s" comment that the only real reason someone would visit Mexico City is for prostitutes rather than culture or museums further encapsulates the board's irreverent tone, where meaningful activities are dismissed in favor of a darker take on motivations for travel.

XO Attitudes Toward Travel

The thread reflects a combination of genuine, well-informed travel advice mixed with the dark humor and nihilism that typifies AutoAdmit (XO). On one hand, there’s a wealth of practical advice for exploring cultural sites, neighborhoods, and local cuisine. On the other hand, the repeated jokes about sex tourism and the dismissal of cultural activities reveal the board’s tendency to view travel through a lens of irony and skepticism.

This dichotomy is emblematic of the broader XO culture, where serious discussions are frequently undercut by cynicism and humor, yet the knowledge of the participants remains substantial. Posters often present themselves as too jaded to appreciate mainstream cultural experiences fully, yet they still share detailed insights, suggesting a more complex engagement with the world than their jokes might initially imply.

Conclusion

This thread demonstrates the blend of irreverence and helpfulness that characterizes XO. Mexico City’s culture and food scene are explored, but with frequent asides mocking the idea of tourism as a form of cultural enrichment. The juxtaposition of genuine travel tips with cynical humor gives insight into the mindset of the board: an often sarcastic, but ultimately knowledgeable, community.

This attitude toward travel mirrors the larger XO ethos—where intellectual discussion coexists with dark, sometimes offensive humor, challenging the mainstream while still deeply engaging with the subject at hand.
