Musk lets people like Alex Jones and Nick Fuentes back on Twitter. He loses the advertisers. There's nothing in America's public discourse that would say "there is a way to have Alex Jones and Nick Fuentes on your platform and still have major corporate backers." Musk seems dun here. So he goes out and campaigns for a presidential candidate, his guy wins, he gains a reputation as a shadow emperor, and boom, the advertisers start coming back. As far as I can tell this has no precedent in American business or political history. Steve Jobs' Apple turnaround probably had similarly low "odds," but it took much longer to play out and did not involve Jobs stepping outside of his circle of competence. Elon takes one stab at politics, pretty much wins the whole sphere overnight and rescues one of his companies from bankruptcy in the process. And this is after Tesla overcame various logistical barriers to EVs becoming an accepted reality. Dude's either a genius or has had the best streak of luck in human history. |

The fact that Tesla is now considered "the obvious sure bet, why are we giving Musk so much credit for that" is complete revisionist history, in reality it was only thanks to Elon's genius + a ton of incredibly hard work (he literally spent years working 100+ hours per week and sleeping at their main factory) + a few lucky well-timed breaks that Tesla became what it is today. Under MANY other CEOs, it would have crumbled along the way. |

This guy has been a decade ahead of literally anyone in several industries, many of which at the time he jumps into them seem unimportant but turn out to be the most important.
If you believe anyone could have made Tesla into an ev car juggernaut, why was it only him?
If you believe anyone could have made SpaceX, why only him? People tend to forget because they can see it now that he jumps into the privatization of space at a time where there was nothing, it was like sci-fi. People can see the rockets now and there’s a bit of 20/20 hindsight but back then it seemed crazy.
And now as TBF has repeatedly pointed out Tesla won’t even primarily be a car company down the road and when it dominates solar/batteries/self-driving/etc (TBF knows better than me there’s other stuff) we’ll again be saying the same thing.
Same thing with SpaceX. It already has Statlink. How valuable will a scaled satellites internet infrastructure that works anywhere be in 5 years? What about when it’s asteroid mining and pulling more platinum and gold in than the entire Earth supply and shit?
I really do think he’s actually like 50 years not 10 ahead of everyone and Tesla was his bridge to get the resources he needed to make sure SpaceX would get us to space, which would then unlock trillions of dollars of value, all of which he’ll pump into getting us on Mars permanently. This Twitter thing was just him accurately diagnosing a mind virus that threatened to bring about totalitarian control before he could get there. So he solved the problem in a few years (so far — we’ll see he’s up against powerful forces but I like his odds). |
