The master pointed to a rock. He said "push that rock back and forth each day and surely you will find enlightenment."
The monk pushed the rock to one end of the room fastidiously, and back to the other side, continuously for months.
When a year passed, the monk returned to ask the master: "I have done what you have said for months, moving the rock back and forth. I have not received enlightenment. Please help, what should I do?"
The master said: "Keep moving the rock."
When the master said this, the monk became enlightened. |
