What do you think about the Portugieser Eternal Calendar with 45 million year moon phase accuracy?

I can't decide if it's the most underrated technical achievement of the 21st century, or a stupid gimmick that they made even worse by making The Rock an ambassador

IWC is bad at marketing and always buries the lede

The single-crown one setting secular perpetual is totally unique and an actually compelling value proposition (eliminating the 30/31 annoyance and changing date forever), much less one that shows day/date/month and a 4-digit year

The moonphase with 45m year accuracy is totally irrelevant and no idea why they spent decades on that

If you regulate the watch to +\- 2 seconds and it never loses power, it would take over 100 years for the date to be off

Do you agree that the single-crown secular perpetual calendar is the most prestigious Swiss complication? I can't find another one with it

I'm workshopping a dark comedy inspired by the Portuguiser Eternal, that zooms in on the luxury watch industry

Picturing Tim Robinson in the lead. Maybe DDL as a demented version of Kurt Klaus

Should I cop a Gronefeld Principia 1941 or am I just compulsively buying watches at this point? Keep in mind for large swaths of the year I am on trips where I can only keep 7 watches with me, so ones that don't make the cut for a particular trip languish in the box.

I never heard of that watch but it looks purpose built for your exact lifestyle

Do you have an FPJ? Or JN Shapiro? FM Crazy Hours?

I bought 3 watches already this year and can't stop thinking abut 3-4 others. Traveling is probably the best reason to get a new watch

I went to high school with Eric Ku and he has like 10-20x watches as you. But he rarely leaves the house wearing one

Your summer watch pouch thing is pretty funny and original for a Reddit flex because you're actually wearing the shit out of people's grails

No FPJ or JN Shapiro, I don't like the FM crazy hours. I have 50+ watches, if he has 10-20x that many then he surely has a problem! Gotta wear them, no point in buying watches to put them in a safe. I love the idea of watches like that (and the Gronefeld) but as a practical matter I almost always end up wearing something 10bar+ that is on steel or rubber and can go to the beach, etc...seems like a shame to spend so much on pieces that get little to no wear. Also I end up wearing my VC 7920v almost every day, tough enough to rotate others in as it is...but still I do WANT the Gronefeld.

Can someone fill me in on why owning multiple expensive watches is a thing? I'm not dissing it, but I would like to understand. I get the idea of display of wealth and the esthetics of glittering jewelry, but beyond that I am drawing a blank. I could imagine getting a shiny hunky solid gold Rolex President, but I would only need one of them. My late sister, who was prole to the core, had dozens of cheap watches which color coordinated with her clothing outfits. Is is like that? Or is more a collector or the-comfort-of-possessions thing? Are they totems? FWIW, I wear an Apple watch and have a Citizen eco-drive still ticking away on my desk in case I ever want to wear it again. I have noticed that the Citizen attracts the interest of gay waiters (it looks Rolexy at first glance). Is that it? The totem thing makes the most sense to me, or maybe attracting gay waiters.

Part of it is compulsuve collecting. Also different watches for different situations, dive watch, dress watch for formal events, pilot watch, I have a dedicated ski watch, chronos, then a lot of GMTs because i’m often away and like to be able to track multiple time zones. Others just for the technical aspect, like I have a Zenith that has a 1/100th second chrono. Thought it was neat they were able to produce that at a reasonable price vs other concept pieces w that complication that cost 5-10x as much.

It's mostly ham radio equipment - Collins, Drake, early ICOM, Ten Tec. Have a 1940's Delco console and some bakelite Zenith am/fm tabletops, plus a nice Grundig. 3 sets of Ohm speakers. 1980s Mitsubishi receiver. I'd like a Zenith console robot dial, but not sure where it would go. I like to use the stuff, at least once in a while.

I used to think some of this stuff was cool but I just can't get over how far technology has come into the future. When I listen to vinyl it just sounds old and dated. Does any of it actually sound different or is it just a really fancy radio with glass tubes and shit. Like what's the material difference in enjoyment?

I think vinyl sounds worse. I have a nice turntable and lots of records but am too lazy to change them every 15 minutes. Much easier to stream Qobuz. Don’t have any tube hifi stuff. No doubt modern stuff is better, but I get sucked in by nostalgia. Now my ears are the limiting factor.

Citizen make some 180 watches also, I have ecodrive ONE that’s 2.98mm thick and will run for 10-12mo w a full solar charge. Pretty impressive they could engineer that capability into such a slim case.

I'm neither a watch guy nor rich, but I can understand the appeal of the highly complex mechanics, all in extreme miniature. But, I'm also an engineer and autistic. For that reason, I like the watches that show off the internal mechanics.

I still wear a Citizen Eco-Drive, by the way. 180 watch.
