This winter was brutal and our home is old (core house built in 1850) so she has done some research on these "beautiful triple pane Marvin Signature Ultimate windows - they have wood interior, aluminum exterior and their seals are air tight 😼"
We get a quote and it's "usually $3500 per window" but if we do all 24 they'll do it for $3k a pop and call it even @ a flat $70k.
I say fuck it, we're calling Renewal by Andersen - she agrees. I think it's gonna be like $30k, maybe $35k. I'm fucking clueless - they quoted me $60k
I might need to become a fuckin window guy now because AI is gonna eat my livelihood in 12-18 months.

Do not buy new windows it's a waste of money
Nevermind I re read your post if your windows are actually old as fuck you should get some new ones but get composite ones not wood or aluminum
Look into Andersen Fibrex but make a big deal with the salesman about not wanting to spend too much and have him quote you some shitty vinyl ones too and talk about how you're getting other vinyl quotes
Also do not let your wife ever talk to the salesman or be involved at all he will just play on her birdbrain and trick her into strongarming you into some rip off you don't want or need

don't buy garbage like 'anderson' windows, or worse 'renewal by anderson'
if you live central us/east coast, look up a dealer for okna windows, or sunrise verde. these are top tier windows and cost less.

Fun hypothetical - if you and your wife were looking for a new home, is there any way windows would be in the top 20 things she'd look at?
100% of the time they'd obsess about some dumb bath tub - there's zero chance a woman would pick one house over another because of insulation.

people claim window installs are easy when they ignore
- having to deal with getting the windows made with good measurements and knowing how to properly shim the gaps/fit
- having to do random wood repairs when you discover rot from moisture
- having all the various materials and supplies to do it
- haul away expense
- you = the warranty, since you're accountable for your labor and the window company will likely blame any product issue on you
basically, installing one window where everything goes right isn't difficult. doing a whole house full of windows that might have various issues associated with the product that was delivered or the frame you're installing it into is a pita. no, done of it is really difficult, but it's time consuming.
not to mention, the above only applies to normal sized windows. good luck doing shit like the massive wall to high ceiling ones from my living room; 3 huge panels of glass that required multiple dudes to carefully deal with.

You mentioned house is 1850. What kind of windows do you currently have? Do you have storm windows? Sometimes all you need is new storm windows. Have friends with a classic 1920s stone colonial outside Philadelphia and it was much cheaper to keep existing original windows with some repair and new painting, and have storm windows installed for extra insulation. Look up Quantapanel.
You will never get your money back with new windows but if existing windows are drafty that's where the real value of new windows come in, but new storms will handle the draftiness problem at a fraction of the cost.
