Always exercised and stayed in decent shape but more or less ate what I wanted (including decent amount of fast food) aside from throwing in some fruits and vegetables and trying to get enough protein. Early 40s now and recovery time from lifting is a bitch. Any noticeable improvements you've seen from eating cleaner?

Yea, you can’t get away with that anymore. Same as you won’t be able to get away with too little sleep like you could in your 20s. Hangovers develop a hair trigger. And reading glasses are right around the corner.

Not including whey probably 100-120 grams but do up to three whey protein shakes a day as well

No. In fact I’ve gained 30 pounds in the past year (I’m mid 40s) and I’ve noticed that whether I eat good or shitty and no matter how much I exercise my body is like “nope, you have this extra fat in your belly permanently.” I also can no longer reach the levels of sexual arousal I reached in my 20s and 30s. Getting old is real, and it sucks.

no as far as adding "healthy" foods and often times theyd make me feel worse.

otoh intermittent fasting has been a yuge help for overall energy and upping my creatine to 10g per day has really helped recovery

big thing that sucks is eating anything sugary. that's always messed me up but now its way worse and i have to be super strict about it. one dessert or sugary breakfast and i seemingly put on half a pound of fat along with twice as much water weight that takes days to go away. plus i'll usually get a cold with sore throat

Creatine 15 grams a day and cut back on workouts a bit. You're not making the NFL at this point, and you're doing too much for your actual goal, which is preserving strength and mobility and feeling good.

I reliably add five to ten pounds of muscle when I switch from a vegetarian to a diet high in red meat without any change in frequency or type of strength training.

No, not really. Too many calories and you get fat. I guess if I eat too much sodium I notice. If I have caffeine too late I really can't sleep now. I take a lot of supplements so maybe that covers for me but I don't really notice if I don't take them. 2 things that definitely have an impact 1) exercise, 2) sleep.
