People think "AI is going to take everyone's jobs," but in reality it's just going to further make work a series of tasks where you manage software and have nothing else to do in between that isn't total theater. People sense this on a deep level and are checking the fuck out.

All one has to do is look around and see it. It's true across almost all white collar fields, IMO. Comes out in strange ways, sometimes. But there is an underlying malaise.

A sort of "is this it, do I just take in data to feed into a 'data lake' and then press some keys for another software program that taps into that 'data lake' and then check over a pre-written by AI email before hitting send and then go on endless Zooms to rehash work done by a number of machines that I 'oversee' while pretending the meetings matter?"

lol 180. this is correct. I think noone wants to say it out loud because a lot of modern work is already theater, but also everyone knows they are about to just become a glorified api wrapper in a slack channel

Keynes thought we'd reduce the workweek to 15 hours. This is basically what has happened, but people are forced to do Performative Work. It's nuts.

Is that really "worse" than routing prompts in a slack thread, getting nitpicked by middle management, sitting in zoom calls to "align stakeholders" on work and pretending your oversight is strategic genius?

Yeah I'm comparing it to what I did in the pre-AI world. I was never a good coder but I did actually enjoy it, and anyone who was willing to accept the smallest amount of personal responsibility and not just be an autistic asshole could generally find a nice place to work. Being a Prompt Manager will suck ass.

although I don't have kids so I don't really give much of a shit if my income gets sliced in 1/4. I've got enough Stuff at this point even being a poormo by xo standards. but it's not going to be fun for people with actual responsibilities

Something else I think we will see is a reallocation of salaries across companies. In part because technology will allow for much smaller admin headcount, but also because people doing actual work are the ones creating all the actual, non-performative value.

Much ink has been spilled about skilled labor shortages. The WSJ had an article a little while back about how top level technicians at auto repair shops can make good money, but it takes a decade to reach that level. But the "good money" described is like $90,000 a year. Meanwhile some fraud sending "slacks" and talking about output from a handful of SaaS programs over Zoom (while being recorded to train AI) makes $120k and works 10% as much as the person who actually fixes things that we use in the real world.

This will change.

Did you major in liberal arts? Or Engineering? The Baumol effect is salient imho. Also blue collar jobs have insane oversupply compared to how much they suck because Scumbags and URMs have extremely low GPAs.

white collar jobs have been all women for 15 years. blue collar jobs are like 50% illegals now.
