when passover begins on a wednesday night, that means the first two days (wed night - fri night) are yom tov which means holy day they're like shabbat, which means they run directly into shabbat, so it's like 3 straight days of shabbat

ordinarily, we wouldnt be allowed to prepare food this friday afternoon to get ready for shabbat - because it's a holy day, and it's insulting to the holy day

so we have a fiction called an eruv tavshilin, which means today we take a hard boiled egg and a piece of matzah and hold it up and say a blessing on it and have in mind that this is the start of our cooking for shabbat and that we will eat it on shabbat.

this way, we can continue cooking on friday afternoon since we already started today by taking the hard boiled egg and matzah piece
