oom? I understand Ishmael's predicament but Queequeg was already settled in for the night when Ishmael appeared.

Also, while I suppose it MIGHT have been customary to bunk up like that in New England at that time, would have a Polynesian have sensed that that was the custom? Seems like he would have needed to be told, since Polynesians can just sleep on the beach and would have no need to share the same bed with a strange man.

It was customary at the time, there really weren't formal 'hotels' for average people, you just stayed in whatever lodging you could get. And Queequeg would have been used to cramped living from working on western ships for a while.

Haven't you heard of flophouses? You might as well be sharing a real bed:

That was market at that time.

See also, "Some historians generally hold that Lincoln was heterosexual,[2][3] noting that the historical context explains any of the supposed evidence.[4] Lincoln had romantic ties with women, and he had four children in an enduring marriage to Mary Todd Lincoln.[5] However, his intense bonds with men may or may not have had more meaning to them, with one notable case being his close friend Joshua Speed, with whom Lincoln lived together – and slept in the same bed as – for four years."
