I've almost totally forgotten "crypto" and I think that basically everyone else has too, even Online people. But I always understood it as fundamentally pump and dump scamming, except for bitcoin which can be treated as a value investment

Over the past few days I've been reading the works of a couple intellectuals I've encountered recently and it's wild how much they wrote about crypto and how seriously they took it as a Real Thing that was going to Change Everything. I do remember a lot of people vaguely "believing" that at the time that crypto was popular, but I guess that I took it so non-seriously that it never fully permeated my mind

It's pretty kooky to think about now. An enormous amount of money changed hands via the "crypto" scam-phenomenon and it's just not talked about at all today. Society has moved on to the next blatant scam, "sports betting," with no pushback whatsoever, despite so many people being totally ruined by crypto

Really weird stuff imo

There is an entire class of girls who go to "conferences" for crypto. I have no idea what the point of this nonsense is. I still own fake internet $ FYI.

Yeah, there appears to still be some residual amount of “scene” surrounding crypto, which has abandoned any pretense of “the tech” or taking it seriously as a consequential technology to be used as a means to concrete ends. It’s just a self-aware scam with women and sociopaths trying to work “angles” to do various pump and dumps and everyone is hoping to be the one who somehow ends up on the right side of any given particular scam

The whole thing is really underrated in how weird it is imo. Like just blatant scamming happening right out in the open. Much like sports gambling

I don't think that bitcoin should be understood as "crypto." It is structurally different from all other "coins" in that it is the only coin to be a legitimate store of value (there can only ever be one cryptocurrency coin that occupies this category)

Bitcoin is a legitimate value investment due to this and its valuation over time seems to reflect this. Willing to hear other opinions about this but it seems pretty self evidently clear to me

Yeah, right? Like people were talking about "the tech" and "white papers" and "your washing machine transacting with your dishwasher" like this was all totally real and not just a completely ridiculous emperor has no clothes circle jerk vehicle for scamming

I thought it was silly at the time but in retrospect it was actually even sillier than I think most of us assumed
