I regret to inform you that my air fryer makes a pretty damn passable steak. Reverse sear on low then switch to broil mode and flip when each side is ready. I guess it's more of a countertop oven than a true air fryer, but it works great when it's too fucking cold and windy outside to cook outside.

Ventilation by my stove sucks and I can't get it as ripping hot as the broiler in my countertop oven. I swear this thing is like a salamander cooker they use in actual steakhouses because the heating elements are just a couple inches above the meat.

reverse searing in the air fryer instead of the oven for the initial cook-through sounds pretty cr actually. and then finish the sear in the pan

update: just cooked a steak in my air fryer and it's actually pretty good lol

i'll probably stick to the good ol cast iron because you can get a better sear, but this is not bad at all

air fryers really can Do Anything. this thing would probably fuck my asian wife for me if i asked it to

Depends on how powerful the convection feature is. Air fryers are on the powerful end of that spectrum. Some connection ovens have a pretty weak fan.

She thinks they all look like shit after a year and you have to buy a new one. Top shelf on our oven is a convection oven. Isn't that what an air fryer is basically?

Basically but an air fryer (or convection toaster oven) is much more convenient and heats up+cooks much faster. You should just buy one anyway and start using it, she won't even notice imo
