If there are five or ten of something in the world (outside of museums), then its value, whether at public auction or in private sale, is determined by demand -- and, more importantly, by the financial capacity of those who demand it. And demand can increase significantly based on market trends, new publications, press coverage, &c.
This differs from high-demand, high-supply "rarities," such as a Mantle rookie card, Detective Comics #1, or a 1895 Morgan dollar, which have sufficient volume & pricing coverage to sell in a much tighter range. But even with these, quality matters. There are still opportunities to cherry-pick a superior example at a standard price that will sell for a premium to a specialist. |
