whether or not you're for or against them, I think it's beneficial for the President to negotiate this stuff. Like what are we going to do, have foreign countries barter with 600+ people in Congress controlled by Jews and special interests? You'll never get anything done.

This is a Big Win for the swamp creatures, the globalists, the turbo boomers booming stealing the future from their grandkids etc.

no, the entire premise of negotiating on this is idiotic. it rests on the assumption that tariffs are good or neutral for americans, but they're just a huge tax hike on americans and hurt american industry rather than helping it.

the only countries that have tariffs as high as trump implemented are third world shitholes. That's a pretty good indication of how self-defeating they are.

what they do share is the intent by the govt to change behavior. very few goods are perfectly inelastic

well when 15% of tariffs are eaten by the foreign importer, that’s not a “tax on Americans”

it’s more nuanced than that. and it’s an important tool for the WH to fight back against foreigners who’ve been treating the U.S. like a dead bloated whale and feasting off our largess

And what's funny is that I see companies raising prices claiming it has to do with imports but it's really just corporate greed. They're testing the water again just to see what people are willing to pay. Has nothing to do with costs. I hope people cut back on spending to stick it to these aholes.

Tariff comes from Arabic, a proclamation of information, prices and a duty on imports. It's a tax for sure. His point though is that it's not a tax on Americans. It's a tax on other countries.

and Americans previously were not buying the American product because it was more expensive. Now these already more expensive American products have less foreign competition.

Do individual Americans have more money in their pockets as a result of the tariffs? If the counter argument is that tariffs create jobs by increasing domestic production, I would ask that proof be provided.

what is the magical golden tariff amount that begins to impact the cost to the consumer? 5% and prices stay the same but 5.01% and the cost is passed on?

Ok so let's just take a step back. The people who support tariffs first argue that a tariff isn't a tax.

The definition of tariff is presented defining it as a "tax".

The tariff supporter then says, ok yeah but it's a specific tax that is imposed on foreign countries and not Americans.

It is then pointed out that it is exclusively American businesses and individuals who pay the tariff.

The tariff supporter then says, ok yeah well it's a larger policy initiative designed to redirect American consumers to American manufacturers by making foreign goods more expensive to buy.

OK so now presented with my example, I would ask, do you think that the desired effect was achieved (i.e. that people are no longer buying swiss watches and instead are buying American made watches)?

Obviously the answer to this question is absolutely fucking not because your comment is "well you don't actually even need a watch."

Luxury goods is a bad example for your side. But at any rate people like you are filling the government coffers. A tax on luxury goods is a relatively good tax. People buy things they don't need volunteer their tax dollars to society. All the necessities we still make here and hopefully will grow American manufacturing.

What part of long term plan do you not understand. If anything you're singling out a sector that only effects the rich. But tariffs are across the board. Maybe we'll start planting avocados here and paying Americans a living wage to do it. Anything that punishes the rich financially is 180. I love tariffs even more after talking to you. You sound like Ben Shapiro telling middle America to eat the bugs. Lmao you have to go back.

Lol @ me being rich.

So now the goal of tariffs is to tax the rich? Wouldn't it just be easier to increase corporate income tax rates? eliminate loop holes of the ultra wealthy? increase the top marginal tax rate?

The actual result of imposing tariffs on all foreign goods is to raise the price of consumer goods for everyone at a time when inflation has already vastly outpaced wages.

in most cases, the tariff will reduce demand for that foreign good, even if you yourself decided it was still worth it

that puts pressure on the country where the company is located, because they are now selling fewer goods to the U.S.

Can you provide some specific examples of the "most cases" you are referring to? Just a few examples of how Trump's tariffs reduced demand for a foreign good resulting in a benefit to American industry.

in terms of penumbra realpolitik bullshit we should just have the President be the King at this point and Congress should be largely vestigial. even if a libpotus comes in next and ruins everything Trump did and puts all MAGA supporters to the sword it would be better than the gridlock bureaucracy at this point. It would at least force the issue of a civil war. We need decisive leadership. Trump being the King has been an awesome development for the country. I accept in advance that a libshit king could come and change everything. We just have to admit that Congress is fucked forever and the Presidential election should be 10x more important. The President is just the King it's okay. Fuck Congress fuck checks and balances. Let 'er rip.

also impeachments should have a vote at the beginning in the Senate to dismiss before the House makes their case. Rapid dismissal impeachments would benefit the country if it has no hope to move forward. Don't give these fuckers a month to shut down the Executive branch ffs.

This is pretty much what Curtis Yarvin was saying 10 years ago with his deference to the administration of Frederick the Great...

Yeah I'm admittedly inconsistent and hypocritical.

But did you not read the part at all where I said I would be okay with a libpotus wielding the same power? I think we have to play it as it lays. To the victor go the spoils. We need absolute rule, we need decisive action. This is not the time for the wholesome chungus approach to conlaw. We need the POTUSy to really mean something. It was a joke position in the beginning but now it's the only way out of this mess.

not everyone in congress sucks and theres no way you have an informed opinion about all 535 of them. this lazy "it all sucks we need big changes even though i have no path to accomplishing them!" is part of why things are the way it is.

are you campaigning for a rep you believe in? no, you're poasting feuntes hot takes and proposing changes that have 0% chance of happening.

You're crazy if you don't think the nativist political movement doesn't keep going. You're nuts to call it a pipe dream. It's just beginning in many ways.

i never said "nothing ever happens" or "nothing can happen."

ok, what specific changes are you proposing that you think are achievable? we're in a thread about scotus overruling trump tariffs and you say potus should have more power: how? you say congress should have term limits and campaign finance restrictions because congress (the body that would need to pass that policy) is bought and paid for, so how do we achieve that?

without resorting to broad, vague hyperhole again, what *specific* achievable thing should we do? and for bonus points, what are *you* going to do as an individual to moge the needle on that happening?

I think Nick is 100% right. We punish the GOP by not voting for them. We let them fail unless they give us what we want. We wanted mass deportations. We wanted tariffs that actually stuck to bring back manufacturing. We want a President who is willing to let the stock market decline if it means paying workers more money. We want to get rid of H1Bs and cut ties with Israel. Simple as. It's Trump 2016. Drain the swamp. America First. Very simple shit. Not rocket science. We let Republican politicians fail unless they deliver. No one has done more to Nickpill this site than me. I'm Influential imo.

I think what we're really seeing here is that the rise of authoritarian regimes which are able to put immense economic pressure on us via central planning, cheating, stealing, etc. has forced our system to become more authoritarian in turn. Like I admit to being a Wholesome Chungus paleolibertarian who wants to return to the old ways of we sit around for decades debating issues on the merits and all this idealistic bullshit. But in the real world we need someone who can pull the trigger in real time. It's obvious. Napoleon reshaped Europe because none of the old absolute monarchies could mobilize a force strong enough to defeat him without a parliamentary system. This is the same effect in reverse. You need centralized decisive power to combat centralized decisive power.

Why do you think the majority of the country is disenfranchised? Popular vote is almost 50/50 every year. But in the same breath you think Congress is full of the best and brightest and it's all legitimate? This is inconsistent.

“this occurs through representatives to congress.” — this is how it works in theory, but in practice the presidency appears to be the most sensitive and responsive to public opinion, as well as being the branch with the most agency. Our legislative branch is paralyzed by procedure and has a lower approval rating than our historically disapproved of President.

it how it has worked in reality too.

i think that the way to getting it back on track is to fix the problems. we're in the context of a conservative majority scotus striking down conservative potus policy, so even if a more powerful executive was desirable, i don't see how we get there.

the system is designed to be very inefficient. it's worked very well for 250 years, we'll see what unfolds, but as long as china can maintain order it doesn't look good. the founders chose this system because a dipshit with absolute power can tank the whole thing.

i think its because people care way too much. we're deadlocked because people are so emotionally invested in polithithics tribalism that no one will compromise so that the system functions.

this does cause more and more normal people to check out, i agree. but it's not that they don't care, and they still vote, its just a waste of time to become active in politics when we cant even get past epstein pedo island debates.

true, and maybe im being pedantic, but that retardation is a product of caring too much. people are so emotionally invested in their side coming out on top that they'll tolerate any means to that end.

so yeah they "don't care" about the system because the care way, way too much about "winning", which is defined as their team winning rather than the best outcome for the country.

no, it's not designed that way, it's designed to prevent that. and it's failed now because the people (the only possible check on elite control) enthusiastically endorse this tug of war.

we need to unite against this but most people play right into it. until that changes it doesn't matter which branch holds power. consolidating in an elite-controlled potus would only exacerbate the problem.

I think the “inefficient system” still works very well. Otherwise western democracies are prone to knee-jerk responses to emotionally-charged events (eg New Zealand and Canada banning guns after shootings). However, it definitely prevents course-corrections when the course needs correcting. By the time we can correct our course, the rest of the world have maneuvered around us.

except there's no other law where he can just unilaterally do tariffs like this against every single country for every single product for BS "security" reasons. other laws have more discrete provisions, requiring waiting periods etc. the whole reason he used this stupid emergency law (which no other POTUS had used for tariffs) is cause there wasn't any other way to do his batshit insane crap

his other "powers" re tariffs are veddy limited compared to this insane shit, he prob will just TACO and blame the SC instead of continuing this shit

πŸ“Œ Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974

Allows the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) to investigate unfair trade practices by foreign countries (e.g., intellectual property theft, discrimination).

If a country is found to be engaging in unfair practices, the president can impose tariffs or other trade restrictions.

There’s no hard cap on tariff rates under Section 301, but procedures must be followed (investigations, consultations, comments).

This is the same law used to justify many of the China tariffs in Trump’s first term.

πŸ“Œ Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962

Lets the president impose tariffs for national security reasons (used for steel, aluminum in recent years).

It’s more restrictive and country-specific than the emergency law Trump tried to use.

πŸ“Œ Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974

Permits temporary tariffs (up to ~15%) for up to 150 days to address trade imbalances.

This is sometimes called a “stopgap” option if a president wants a quick tariff measure that doesn’t go through lengthy investigations.

πŸ“Œ Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930

Allows tariffs up to 50% on imports from countries that the U.S. finds discriminate against American businesses.

Never widely used, but a legal tool available.

its not possible to reimplement them against all 190 countries at the levels they are, at most he can do 15% for like 150 days or some shit. for other tariff laws there's procedures required that take time and dont think he can do it for everything against everyone

The reasons for the checks and balances and separation of powers is so that the elites could continue to control the nation because the people would not be able to enforce their will because the factions of the government are set against each other.. divide and conquer was what the strategy was as imparted in the letter from Madison to Jefferson.. the founding plutocrats would love the way that the elite still have power here. Hope this helps
