Also read Ashita no Joe, of course, which HnI is sort of a spiritual successor to.

I used to run an FTP server where people shared this sort of junk, and I read & consume media somewhat compulsively (or did back then, with more time).

I've been into Hajime no Ippo for over a decade, dude. [Used to be fairly fluent in Japanese, knew over 1,000 of the most common Kanji due to the Henshall (sp?) method and spaced repetition, etc.)

My favorite character has got to be Takamura, obviously --- for example, when people finally respect him after his fight with (I think) David Eagle, and then he loses respect b/c he starts shouting he'd be happy to fuck the hot women there then they'd have a nation of champions. He's just too 180.

But him aside, I identify most with Itagaki. I like his style, natural athleticism, and also the fact that he comes from a family that constantly makes dumb puns, ends his fights by bowing, and humorously says "ItaGAKImasu" instead of "itadakimasu."

TIL peterman was fluent in Japanese. Did he ever go overseas to solicit swarthy Japanese truckers?

oh, and Ashita No Joe is for sure worth watching. It's like a grittier Ippo. You'd probably also enjoy Baki the Grappler.

kind of makes me want to go to japan and watch some fights. Korakuen Hall seems to have big fights all the time, right near the tokyo dome.

japanese guys currently hold a bunch of belts in the lower weight classes, too, so some of those are going to be title defenses and/or title acquisitions.
