There's always mofos sandbagging and rewards guys who don't play much whose handicap is mostly based on warmup rounds when they're dialed in for the club championship.
Just reward whoever has the best score and have age/gender brackets. Or have different winners from each tee. Never understood the handicap shit for actual competition. |

Two years ago I was tied for the lead on day 2 of the Torrey Pines Men's Club championship (I shot 69(gross) on the first day on the North) when I hit it in the front greenside bunker on #14 on the South. I shanked that shot into the right greenside bunker. Then I shanked 3 more into the lip of the bunker. I finally airmail shanked one over the green into the canyon. I shanked a couple more chips until I got onto the putting surface and then walked away with a 13 on the hole. I can still hit the ball okay from tee to green, but any short game shot is a 50/50 shank proposition and I quite literally shank every single bunker shot. After trying to fix the issue on my own with books, videos, drills, visualization, etc., I took a one hour lesson with a supposed "bunker guru". He observed me shank a bunch of shots and then he had me try various things over the course of the hour and I still ended up shanking every single shot - even when I closed down the face and just tried to chunk and run it. At the end, he said, "Sorry, man, I don't know what to tell you. I've never seen anything like it. Just keep trying until you find something." LOL. My backswing shoulder and hip turns are right at pro numbers, but I'm taking the club back too far inside and hinging the wrists too late.
Downswing is kind of a mess, shoulders opening up to soon and hips too late causing me to chicken wing the left arm, lose hinge too early, dive towards the ball too much.
On the plus side, my 7i swing speed has gone from mid 70s to mid 80s in a year since getting back into golf. Think I can be 90+ with better body sequencing and arm structure. |
