I haven't read the books since I was probably 13 or 14 and bought these

https://www.amazon.com/Hobbit-Illustrated-Author-Tolkien-Editions/dp/0063347539

https://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-Illustrated-J-R-R-Tolkien/dp/0358653037

https://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-Deluxe/dp/0544273443

First the bad: the Tolkien illustrated hardback kind of sucks. It's just too unwieldy to read and there aren't that many illustrations anyway, I returned this one

The non-illustrated sort-of-hardback is great to read out of and looks pretty good for a $25 1200 page book

But the Tolkien illustrated hobbit is 180. Lots more illustrations relative to text and it's printed on high quality paper (presumably the illustrated all in one couldnt do this just because it would've been comically thick).

They are good books that liberal artists accuse of being “products of their time”. I don’t know what this is supposed to mean. Everything is a product of its time afaict. Is LoTR not a product of pre-war English romanticism and nobility? Why can’t Elric just be a sleazy 70s anti hero like he’s meant to be.

Even this website? Not sure if I want to know the answer because I’ve really liked it here circa 2012 to the present, whenever that may be
