The Scotland thing is because Scotland had a whole legal architecture up and running and very different to the English legal architecture when England and Scotland united in 1701 (from memory). Date: December 2nd, 2025 11:21 AM Author: Reinhard Heydrich Uunona (✅🍑) lol yes but I very seriously doubt that a common law lawyer has any way of becoming a Portuguese lawyer other than to do a Portuguese law degree and their bar exam or whatever "apprenticeship" system they have there if you ever decide to go live in your ancestral homeland and you want to take a legal qualification with you, the way to do it is to get qualified in Ireland, and that gives you full freedom of movement to work as a lawyer in Portugal (there is automatic full cross-recognition of legal quals inside the EU, i.e. much more automatically mobile than inside the U.S., in theory at least)] that's why I became an Irish lawyer, because it was easy for me on the basis of already being an English lawyer |

Some legislation passed by the pre-1707 Parliament of Scotland is still also valid.
Early Scots law before the 12th century consisted of the different legal traditions of the various cultural groups who inhabited the country at the time, the Gaels in most of the country, with the Britons and Anglo-Saxons in some districts south of the Forth and with the Norse in the islands and north of the River Oykel. The introduction of feudalism from the 12th century and the expansion of the Kingdom of Scotland established the modern roots of Scots law, which was gradually influenced by other, especially Anglo-Norman and continental legal traditions. Although there was some indirect Roman law influence on Scots law, the direct influence of Roman law was slight up until around the 15th century. After this time, Roman law was often adopted in argument in court, in an adapted form, where there was no native Scots rule to settle a dispute; and Roman law was in this way partially received into Scots law. |
