The Ford Maverick is the closest thing size-wise to the great compact trucks of old. But it's not body-on-frame, so that is a deal breaker to many. You can find decent deals on 2010 - 2011 Ford Rangers if you're willing to look (and possibly ship one to you.) And if you spend $300 - $500, you can upgrade the infotainment and make it feel a lot newer.

Definitely seems like there is a big opportunity for a true compact truck again, though bullshit safety regulations have made it tougher. And consumer sentiment has become basically retarded.

dont remember the precise details OP but it has to do with emissions and footprint (wheelbase and track width) basically the bigger the footprint the easier CO2 targets become while small pickups like the old Ranger have targets almost impossible to meet with a profitable engine and decent haul/tow capacity. small "trucks" like the Maverick squeak through because they're unibody transgender hybrid crossovers on car platforms.
