A few years ago, I decided I wanted to drastically reduce my non work screen time. I’ve never been active on social media so it was mainly here and other mindless scrolling. I’ve always been present with my kids but I’m more present in daily life now. Life is busy but good; spent 2 weeks traveling this summer and now looking forward to ski season with the kids. Time really flies so trying to enjoy the moments.
I’m on a call for the next few hours so may answer some questions but otherwise plan on staying away. Hope my xoxo friends are doing well! |

Im sure as a parent you know there’s not too much extra time but the time I do have that I wasted before, I mainly read books and I started playing piano again. It’s also neat to re-learn and re-read things with my kids. I go through phases of more exercise and not but average 3-4 days a week. Now that my joints and everything else are hurting more, trying to do more yoga and working on my flexibility and core strength has been a challenge. My brain has severely atrophied over the last few decades and trying to prevent my body from doing so. I try not to watch too much tv although sometimes you do want to zone out. |

I fairly regularly go to Park City and chit-chat with a lot of (White) skiers from LA / SoCal. I've never run into a non-White skier from LA / SoCal.
So I'm curious whether, (1) Non-Whites have taken over the CR LA Ski areas and the ones who go to Park City are simply avoiding all of the non-Whites or (2) Non-Whites are simply to lazy to put in the effort to get to Park City, or (3) Non-Whites don't feel comfortable in Park City because it is too White. |

Date: September 25th, 2024 1:12 PM Author: Contagious forum Mammoth is a serious mountain 5 hrs from LA. Azns and non-azns both go. We have the ikon pass so we go to mammoth 2-3 times a season. My son wants to join the mammoth ski team but the schedule would be way too tough. When people think local local, they go to big bear but it’s terrible.
It’s not convenient to go from LA to Utah because everything is outside SLC and requires a 45 min-hr drive at least. Overall it takes about 5 hrs btwn airport and rental car when you can easily drive to mammoth.
We prefer Alta/snowbird and smaller resorts like Brighton to park city. It’s inconvenient to navigate btwn park city and canyons. I have no idea if Utah attracts fewer azn visitors in general, but azns tend to be boarders and Utah has higher proportion of skiiers. I think I see more Azns in general in Colorado resorts and obviously all over Tahoe/mammoth. They’re all boarders blocking everyone eating azn snacks lol. My son is going to work more on boarding this season. My daughter says she’s going to do a black on skis this season. I’m proud of them both. |

We spent a few days in Murren, which has all of two restaurants outside hotels and one was Chinese run by a guy from Singapore and it was more than decent. Suspect plenty of skiers come from Asia. |

Regarding "Park City" -- this opinion pisses off SLC-fags -- I use the term Park City to not only include Park City + Canyons (now combined), but also Deer Valley (literally abuts PCM) and, to the true consternation of SLC-Fags, Brighton / Solitude and Alta / Snowbird.
Brighton / Solitude is literally less than 1.5 miles from PCM and Alta is only like 3.5 miles from PCM.
I'm not saying I'm right, especially since the drive between bases is so long, but it's annoying as fuck to have to specify 6 different mountains you're hitting on a 3-4 ski-trip -- when you're not skiing outside of a 6-7 mile radius.
Are there any times I can go to Mammoth and not have to deal with (no offence) annoying Asian snowboarders spending 95% of their day sitting down in the middle of runs chit chatting or snacking or whatever? |

You’re right that I got really lucky. I survived the 2008 crash intact and I also put a lot of money into the market during that time. I talk to 20/30 something’s who are trying to buy a house and it’s impossible. My kids aren’t going to be afford anything but they have us to help them.
My last luxe handbag purchase was prob 15 years ago. Once you get something once or twice, the thrill wears off. I’m also old now and I hate having stuff. |

Goal is to get boys through college and then into their first house. Depends how things play out but am already earmarking $1M per kid between college and their first property. Maybe even more depending on where they end up living. You have any thoughts re fancy private colleges versus a good flagship, even OOS? It's apples and oranges compared to when we were students.

I have no idea what my kids are going to do but they need to do what my pool engineer does and make millions. He sits at home and charges chumps like me $25k a pop and writes off everything.
I’d be very very happy for my kids to attend a UC but they cannot get into any UC other than the commuter ones. UCs do not take SATs and they also don’t like kids from private school (my kids). One kid I know at U$C currently was rejected from every single UC including Irvine, Santa Cruz, SD and SB. 1500+ SATs etc. I know SC is a joke too but it’s not easy to get in.

That's how fucked up California is. And the money is already in the 529s. But I do have hopes for some of the better OOS flagships for the oldest. We will see!
I also keep telling the boys to forget about grad school unless they have a compelling desire to become an astrophysicist or something equally serious. If it was something requiring grad school in the 1950s, then that works. Otherwise get a real job, we'll help them find one, and take it from there. I'm not letting them waste a few years "finding themselves" as a kayaking guide in Wyoming then a joke master's only to end up a social worker. Or so I tell myself! We'll see!

Please don’t make me pay for notre dame, my soul will die. I agree with you on 100% on the grad school but realistically am I going to say no if the money’s there and the s&p grows at 7% on average. Date: December 4th, 2025 9:52 PM Author: nutella Thankfully and fortunately no although we were in the evacuation zone since we live hillside. We know a lot of people affected. That was a dark time, literally and figuratively. I’d adopted a stray cat from the street months before that I couldn’t pick up and put in a carrier because he was so skittish, so I stayed behind with this stupid cat. I am NOT a cat person btw, totally dog person but I love all animals. This sounds very LA, but my neighbor recommended a cat whisperer who would come over and stuff your cat into a carrier for like $500. I had her on speed dial in case the fire got any closer.
