Open queue is super fun but your friend is coping. An equivalent rank in open queue could basically be translated as a full rank or more down in role queue.

For reference it took grinding and work to get to Diamond 5 for me on Tank and I wasn’t able to hold it for very long. I only play Open Queue with my friends, some of who are of a much lower skill level, and 80% of the time we’re all either drunk or high, and I still have managed to maintain Diamond in Open Queue

Open queue is the less “serious” ranked mode, so the players who are the most motivated and committed to being good at OW are playing role queue, not open queue. Ranks are relative, so when the best players are not in the player population, everyone’s rank is higher than it would be otherwise.

Just the fact that your friend is a full 1.5 tiers lower in role queue should be a pretty clear indicator. I get that he doesn’t play role queue as much, but if his skill was equal to high diamond role queue players, there’s no way he’d be lingering in gold/plat just because he’s not as experienced in the role queue format.

I can’t imagine ever trying to play seriously on Open Queue unless we had a full stack of 5.

I think the answer is as simple at that. The competition is weaker on Open Queue because anyone who is taking it seriously isn’t there.
