By "rock" I mean anything similar to stuff you used to hear on AOR radio back in the day and its progeny (like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc.).

I mean I am sure there are bands out there making rock music but it isn't popular like it used to be.

Maybe I am just old.

Yeah even complex pop music from the 2000s is dead like even stuff like KP, Gaga, Britney, and Xtina are dead and gone.

Today's artists are influencers and internet personalities who convert to ultra low effort pop stars. The problem is that the music is not the product. No one has solved for this. Regardless of genre there's no functional musical artists where the music is the art. The art is the attention economy which is fueled by social media.

I mean not exactly. the golden age of rock circa 1963-1978 still gets a ton of air play and streaming numbers, and to some extent it’s brief revival from like 1987-1996. those eras will probably always put up huge numbers even after the fans and artists are all dead, but it was so well done it’s just hard for new artists to improve on it or even capture the same vibe

there's more of it than ever but yeah, no one cares anymore. like music in general has kind of faded away as a thing of importance. it's just background noise now. i don't think the kids identify with music like they used to. there's so much of it, they have instant access to all of it, and there's tons of new shit everyday. you can't build an identity around that, it's too much to really care about in a meaningful way. and if everyone else can instantly listen to obscure punk, what really makes you a punk? it used to mean something that you took the effort to get into whatever genre you identified with. now there's nothing to it. there's so much media and entertainment that it's all worthless.

There's a huge untapped market for rock. You would think that a record label would take a gamble on a promising songwriter writing in the rock genre and find him some talented bandmates. If it's a success you print money for life. You would think this would be a high risk high reward model. No one is trying this?

There's a woke element too where executives in the industry want to hear more black music. They just adore rap and rnb stuff. Anything to stick it to the goyim.

Yeah because those bands aren't popular. The songs aren't good, the band isn't famous, no one wants to hear them, hence paying out of pocket for touring. If your band is really desirable people pay higher ticket prices and you actually profit. You have to make super huge hits people want to hear over and over. No one is saying James Hetfield is poor. Just make better songs, bro. Make a masterpiece quit crying. No one cares about ur favorite obscure band that's broke. If u have 10 fans ur ass period. I think people have a distorted sense because there are bands where everyone has real jobs and they can afford to tour and they do have like 1000 subs or whatever and they think that makes them a real band. You're not Metallica, bro. Ur just a guy. Get more famous with ur music. Didn't Oliver Tree get rich and famous? Ok so it's possible. Too much whining. Too many zogged out low T whites. Nyuug may actually have a point superior anglo culture is cooked.

I don't necessarily like all those bands but those are all post 2010 success stories. It definitely happens. More commonly in the British Commonwealth than the USA. You can obviously make it big in rock. The generation before that had White Stripes, Kings of Leon, MCR, FoB, Panic, TBS, Linkin Park and countless more. So yes it's diminished but it's not gone. If someone had a lot of talent they would rise to the top.

I met a rapper who had 10 million streams on YouTube and he said he got a check for 100k. Don't forget it's across all platforms. Some pay more than Spotify, some less. And don't forget touring and merch is going to be a much bigger piece of the pie than streaming and album sales/digital downloads. They probably each make 100k a year which is better than working in law or some other gay shit.

I wonder how teens perceive older music these days.

Until I got to college, I was allergic to anything that came out before I turned ~10. That might be a normal teenage knowitall thing. But there was a lot of genuinely fresh stuff coming out in the 90s, and I wanted to be at the forefront of it.

It would be *mindblowing* to me if there's a bunch of 16yos walking around right now with a reflexive dislike of anything that came out before 2020.

There's a weird Gen Z resurgence of fandom for deftones. They blew up really big on TikTok. Kids walk around in deftones shirts now.

Rock is still really popular. It's not that fewer people like it. It's that new rock of high quality isn't being produced. That's the million dollar question. Why can't new unestablished artists make it at the highest level

No one can explain. But rock is still huge and even bigger in Canada and UK.

If you had a lot of money and a lot of talent you could just force meme great rock records into existence.

Look at how Tame Impala and King Gizzard and The Chats came out of Australia. Much whiter country, poorer than US, lower cost of living. It's still possible, but probably not in the US. We have a real CoL problem where you're ultra poor until you're ultra rich. No middle class means no one to take risks. 50% of whites are zogged out the other half are coders and attorneys trying to survive. Everyone and everything is cooked but they seem to still be cooking in Australia. Even Alvvays came out of Canada and Alt J is British. There's definitely a cultural element. All our best whites are watching Blacked.com or they went to lolschool to avoid poverty.

Why can't anyone make new rock that's good? Greta van Fleet had a moment. Geese is big right now. But no one would say either of them were good. They're around. They made it. But they're not good.

Yes, it appears dead. Kids aren't taking the time to learn to play instruments, jam with their friends, form bands, and tour around to try make it. Those are necessary for the rock ecoystem. They're the prerequisites to having rock music.

Anyway, here's the full movie of Rock N Roll High School without commercials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRuuL1jaeJE

A lot of white suburban kids have dad's life RSF and don't work and don't have to. There's a lot of laziness among suburban white kids who are fundamentally the only people who can really make new rock. A lot of kids who would be doing it are smoking weed in their dad's BMW. Whites are kind of cooked because we're collectively wealthier than any period in history. And only whites can make rock.

there is actually so much of it now that people can record cheaply at home.

I listen to a bunch of "new" indie bands that are fucking great that no one has ever heard of (Beach Vacation, for example) that would have been utterly epic in 1994 or whatever. But yeah no one gives a shit now

Yeah fuck off with that low T indie bullshit. It's not actually good and it wouldn't have been huge in 1994. Compare this stoner nonsense to In Utero and Melon Collie and Ten and shit that was huge at the time. Nobody would actually listen to this crap over that. The people who think anything today is just as good are completely delusional and have zero credibility. If it were just as good we would all know about it. You're like the people who think US Soccer is knocking on the door of winning the world cup when they're just bad at soccer. Be honest don't be an asshole and lie to people about your gay indie fetish.

it's fine

all worthwhile culture is going under the radar so it can actually produce itself as itself

there has been so much damage done to the scenes that produce it by these "libs" and "cons" faggots warring over a corpse that it will likely take years to recover

Virtually impossible to write an original hit rock song with 70 years of rock corpus and I don't know why anyone would expect it to happen

Would you expect someone in 2026 to compose a legendary classical piano piece?

Way easier to write a hit song and break the glass so to speak in weird new music genres
